Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
JUPITER, Fla. - Just one day after recording their fifth shutout-win of the season with a 6-0 victory, the Palm Beach Cardinals (23-20, 52-60) were held without a run for the 11th time in a 6-0 loss to the Fort Myers Miracle (16-26, 50-62) Saturday night in game one of a three-game series at Roger Dean Stadium.
Eric Fornataro (6-11, 3.75) matched a season high with eight strikeouts through six innings but ended up with the loss, his fifth straight and team-high 11th of the year. The fourth-year righty gave up nine hits, including a two-run homer, while walking one to account for the four earned runs - the most he has allowed since June 14.
Fort Myers picked up single runs in the third and fifth innings on RBI hits from 19-year-old Oswaldo Arcia and a big two-spot in the sixth thanks to Steve Liddle's second homer of the year. Cardinals' manager Luis Aguayo was also ejected in the fifth for arguing a checked-swing call.
Left-hander Dan Calhoun made his first appearance at Roger Dean Stadium since returning from a nearly month-long stint at Class-AA Springfield with two scoreless innings, allowing just a hit while striking out one. Righty Chris Corrigan gave up two more runs in a rough ninth inning that featured a walk, two hits and an error.
Alan Ahmady hit his 14th double and was the only Palm Beach player to record multiple hits in the contest. Lefty Edgar Ibarra (3-8, 6.08 ERA) threw five scoreless innings for the win while Alex Wimmers finished it out with four innings to earn his first save.
Palm Beach will look to rebound from the tough loss tomorrow evening in game two of the series as young righty Carlos Martinez (3-1, 4.45 ERA) takes on southpaw Matt Tomshaw (0-0, 8.31 ERA) at 5:05 p.m. All Comcast customers are invited to attend the game for just $3.00 as part of XFINITY Night at Roger Dean Stadium.
