St. Lucie Mets News Release

The St. Lucie Mets returned home to Digital Domain Park after a 2-6 road trip to kick off a three-game series with the Charlotte Stone Crabs. Trailing 6-1 late, the Mets tried to rally but came up just short in the 6-3 loss. The loss drops the Mets to 21-21 on the half and 59-53 overall.

The Mets fell behind early as the Stone Crabs got to Mets starter Scott Moviel for a run in the third. St. Lucie answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Stefan Welch scored Cesar Puello from third on a sacrifice fly to make it a 1-1 game. The Stone Crabs responded plating two more runs in the fourth putting the Mets in a 3-1 hole. Charlotte tacked on runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to go up 6-1. The Mets would mount a rally in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs, Charlotte reliever walked the bases loaded and Cesar Puello made him pay. Puello singled in two runs cutting the lead to three runs with the heart of the order up. Wilmer Flores could not keep the rally going flying out deep to Left Field to end the Mets threat. St. Lucie would again attempt to rally in the ninth . A leadoff walk to Stefan Welch and a single off the bat of Jefry Marte gave the Mets two on and nobody out but the next three hitters would be retired in a row to end the comeback attempt.

Scott Moviel took the loss but only allowed three runs while scattering ten hits in five innings of work. Wilmer Flores had three hits on the night, Cesar Puello added a hit, run and RBI and Stefan Welch walked three times and drove in a run in the 6-3 loss.

The Mets head to Port Charlotte Sunday to take on the Charlotte Stone Crabs in games two and three of the series. Zack Wheeler will make his second start with St. Lucie after being acquired from the San Jose Giants of the California League. Wheeler was not greeted well in his FSL debut. The Dunedin Blue Jays got to him for four runs on seven hits in four innings. Overall, Wheeler is 7-6 with a 4.21 ERA in 17 starts. He has tallied 102 strikeouts to 47 walks and is holding opposing hitters to a .232 average covering 92 innings of work.
