Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL - Sometimes, everything just clicks at once. Sunday was one of those games for the Stone Crabs.
Henry Centeno buckled down to throw five shutout innings and the Charlotte offense banged out two runs in each of the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, beating Dunedin 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at Charlotte Sports Park.
Centeno (1-1) was in trouble from the get-go, but the 21 year-old recent call-up showed great poise. The right-hander allowed back-to-back singles to Jonathan Davis and Richard Urena to lead off the game, but three straight air outs ended the inning without either runner coming in to score.
In the second, Centeno walked the first two men to face him, but again escaped the jam. With two out and runners on second and third, Centeno suffered a bloody nose, but worked through it to strike out Davis and end the inning. Centeno's lone 1-2-3 frame was the third, but he left the game with a 1-0 lead through the fifth.
The Charlotte offense took care of the rest. The Stone Crabs started the game hot, as Alec Sole singled with one out in the first, stole second, went to third as the throw went high into center, and scored on a Mac James sac fly. But the Crabs didn't really ratchet things up until the fifth.
Grant Kay lined the first pitch from Chris Rowley (4-1) down the left field line for a double leading off the fifth inning. Armando Araiza took the next pitch into right center for a base hit, scoring Kay and putting Charlotte ahead 2-0. Araiza went to second on a flyout, and two batters later, Thomas Milone singled him home for the third run of the day.
In the sixth, Justin Williams drew a one-out walk, and Kay singled to put runners on first and second. Araiza bounced to the mound, advancing the runners, and Jace Conrad lined a base hit to the outfield to score both Williams and Kay to break the game open at 5-0. Williams tacked on himself in the seventh, singling home Milone and Sole with two out to make it 7-0 Charlotte.
Ian Gibaut and Edwin Fierro combined for four scoreless innings from the bullpen, finishing off the Stone Crabs' fifth shutout win of the year.
The series continues tomorrow night from Charlotte Sports Park, as RHP Benton Moss (3-5, 4.16) takes the mound for Charlotte against Dunedin RHP Conner Greene (2-4, 3.12). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35.
