Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL - For those who can't imagine anything better than hours upon hours of baseball, Saturday was a dream.
For five-and-a-half hours, encompassing two games and a 28-minute rain delay, the Stone Crabs and Threshers battled, and at the end of the night, the two teams each emerged with one victory.
Clearwater took Game 1 7-1, buoyed by a five-run first inning. Charlotte starter Chris Pike allowed five runs, only two earned, through 31 pitches and had to leave the game recording just two outs. Jeff Howell came on and got the last out of the frame, but the damage was done.
Charlotte scored just once in the opener, on a solo home run in the sixth inning by Andrew Velazquez. It was the first homer of the year for the Rays' No. 29 prospect, who missed the first 38 games of the season with a hamstring injury.
The news was better for those who stuck around for Game 2, as the Stone Crabs defeated the Threshers 5-2 in a two-hour, 24-minute slugfest. Charlotte knocked Clearwater starter John Richy (1-1) out of the game in the second inning, with four runs over the first two frames. Jace Conrad led off the second with a game-tying home run, his first of the year, and Landon Cray gave the Stone Crabs the lead with a safety squeeze base hit.
Yonny Chirinos (6-0) pitched brilliantly once again, allowing one earned run and two total on five hits through six innings. Chirinos walked none and struck out six. Chirinos has walked just one batter in 44.1 High-A innings in 2016.
Michael Franco and Brian Miller combined to throw a scoreless seventh, earning Miller his eighth save of the season.
The Stone Crabs begin a four-game set with the Dunedin Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon at Charlotte Sports Park, their last series before the All-Star Break. RHP Henry Centeno (0-1, 4.05) toes the rubber for Charlotte against Dunedin RHP Chris Rowley (4-0, 2.89). First pitch is scheduled for 12:35.
