Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
TAMPA, FL - Sometimes, a good old-fashioned blowout is exactly what you need.
Wavering on the fringes of the FSL South division hunt, the Charlotte Stone Crabs showed up and walloped the Tampa Yankees, scoring a season high twelve runs in a 12-4 laugher at George M. Steinbrenner Field on Saturday night.
Believe it or not, the Yankees did lead once in this game. Thairo Estrada reached on an error with one out in the second against Stone Crabs starter Yonny Chirinos. Two batters later, Jake Skole and Bo Thompson slapped back-to-back two-out singles to score Estrada and get the Yankees the early lead.
That's about all Tampa had to enjoy in this game. The Stone Crabs scored four runs in the third against poor Ian Clarkin (4-5), with the bottom third in the order all singling to load the bases with no one out. Thompson threw the beginning of a double play attempt into left field, scoring two, a wild pitch from Clarkin brought home a third, and another error on a pickoff throw scored a fourth run.
Things just got worse for the Yankees. After committing two errors in the third, Tampa's defense made two more gaffes in the fifth, leading to two runs and Clarkin's removal from the game. Charlotte picked up two more in the sixth against Gabriel Encinas and another in the seventh against Jonny Drozd, finally capping off the night with a three-run ninth.
Cristian Toribio was the biggest performer of the night, raising his batting average 19 points with a 4-for-4 evening. Toribio homered, doubled, and walked, reaching base five times. Riley Unroe went 3-for-6 with a home run and 5 RBI, the first Stone Crab to hit that number this season. Alec Sole produced a 3-for-5, and Jace Conrad scored twice while going 2-for-5.
Charlotte looks for another win on Sunday afternoon at Steinbrenner, with RHP Henry Centeno set to battle Yankees RHP Chance Adams. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00.
