Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - Despite falling behind 7-1 to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in the third inning, the Stockton Ports offense knew it still had plenty of time to make up the large deficit. The Ports, however, didn't waste any time in doing it, scoring five runs in the bottom of the third and three in the fifth to take the lead en route to their third straight win, beating the Quakes by a final of 10-7.
The Quakes sent tremors through Ports starter Fautino De Los Santos early in the ballgame. De Los Santos surrendered a two-run homer to Mark Trumbo in the first, and a solo shot to P.J. Phillips in the second as the Quakes took a 3-0 lead.
Stockton got a run back in the second on an RBI double from Jermaine Mitchell, but the Quakes offense kept pouring it on in the third. De Los Santos allowed back-to-back walks to Anthony Norman and Tadd Brewer to start the inning, followed by an RBI single from Wil Ortiz and a two-run single to Trumbo to give Rancho a 6-1 lead. De Los Santos walked Drew Toussaint, and then was lifted from the game after just two-plus innings.
Derrick Gordon (1-0) replaced De Los Santos and did a masterful job. Gordon allowed an RBI single to the first batter he faced--Abel Nieves--to make it 7-1 Rancho. The run was charged to De Los Santos, giving him seven earned runs on the night. Following the RBI single, Gordon struck out the side to end the inning, and went on to retire the next four batters in a row, striking out six of the first eight batters he faced. After allowing back-to-back walks, in the fifth, Gordon got Phillips to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Gordon earned the win after tossing three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out six.
Stockton, trailing 7-6, grabbed the lead for good in the fifth against Quakes reliever Marco Albano (0-2). With one out, Albano walked Sean Doolittle, and then gave up a two-run homer to right to Jed Morris to give the Ports an 8-7 lead. Morris went on to go 3-for-4 on the night and score four times. Two batters later, Jermaine Mitchell teed off and belted one over the Jackson Rancheria Back Porch to make it 9-7.
Albano was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs in two innings.
The Ports added a run in the seventh on a sac-fly from Larry Cobb to make it 10-7. Sam Demel pitched in with three innings of scoreless relief for Stockton, and Chris Farley (SV, 1), despite allowing the potential tying run to reach the plate in the ninth, held on for his first save of the season.
The Ports have now won three-in-a-row, and they'll look to make it four straight on Saturday when the host the Quakes in Game 3 of this four game series. Due to Henry Rodriguez' Friday promotion to AA-Midland, right-hander Graham Godfrey (0-0, 2.84 ERA) will get the ball for the Ports. He'll be opposed by Quakes right-hander David Herndon (0-1, 3.75 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with post-game fireworks to follow, presented by Food-4-Less.
