Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Jake Stinnett turned in 6.2 innings of one-run ball and Ian Happ delivered a two-run home run as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans defeated the Carolina Mudcats 6-5 Saturday at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
Stinnett (2-0) retired the first eleven batters of the night and struck out seven without walking a batter.
With the game scoreless in the bottom of the second, Yasiel Balaguert and Jason Vosler both singled to put runners at the corners. After Balaguert scored on a wild pitch, Jeffrey Baez hit a triple to the left field wall to make the score 2-0 Pelicans (9-8).
With score still 2-0 in the third, Gleyber Torres and Happ both walked with one out. Balaguert then bounced a double off the warning track to extend the Pelicans advantage to three. Jason Vosler followed with a sacrifice fly to score Happ and make it 4-0 Myrtle Beach.
Mudcats (7-10) starter Ryan Lawlor (1-1) retired four in a row at that point before giving up an opposite field triple to Torres with two outs in the fifth. That's when Happ ripped a line drive over the wall in left field to make the score 6-0 Myrtle Beach.
After Stinnett was lifted with two outs in the seventh, Jordan Minch worked a scoreless inning, with David Berg getting the final out in the eighth.
Berg returned to the mound in the ninth but ran into trouble. After an error, he allowed three straight hits to Jordan Edgerton, Braxton Davidson and Joseph Odom, making the score 6-4. However, the UCLA alum would retire the next three batters to seal his team-leading third save of the year.
The Pelicans will turn to Tommy Thorpe (1-1, 4.35) to try and win the series on Sunday, as Carolina will go with Matt Withrow (0-0, 0.00). Coverage begins at 4:50 p.m. on MyrtleBeachPelicans.com and the TuneIn App, with first pitch at 5:05 on a Family Sunday.
The 2016 season is the 18th season for the Pelicans franchise and second as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2016, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail info@myrtlebeachpelicans.com, or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
