South Carolina Stingrays News Release
The South Carolina Stingrays opened the 2013-14 season Saturday and Sunday with a pair of contests against the defending Kelly Cup Champion Reading Royals at Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania for a week record of 1-0-0-1.
Looking to spoil a banner-raising evening, the Stingrays jumped out to a 2-1 lead over the Royals in the second period Saturday, but Reading tied the contest early in the third period and slipped by with a 3-2 shootout victory. Forwards Jack Downing and Jordan Owens netted tallies for the Stingrays and goaltender Jeff Jakaitis made 26 saves.
The Stingrays responded Sunday with a 3-2 victory of their own in regulation. Forward Scott Campbell erased an early Royals lead with a power-play goal in the first period and rookie Marc Hagel netted his first professional marker moments later. Former Royal Chris Langkow capped off the Stingrays' scoring with a shorthanded tally midway through the third period. Owens registered two assists.
