Fayetteville Guard News Release
Myrtle Beach, SC: In support of its 50th Anniversary in 2004, Sports Illustrated has engaged in a yearlong celebration of sports in the U.S. The program is multi-tiered, featuring comprehensive editorial coverage, in-book and online, of the "passion" for sport within each state as well as a 12-month event marketing tour that brings the Sports Illustrated franchise to life. SI kicked-off it's Anniversary in early July in Newport, Rhode Island, and will travel across the country for 50-weeks and wrap-up in New York in July 2004.
April 9th through April 11th the SI 50th Anniversary tour will be in Myrtle Beach at Broadway at the Beach, under the theme of "Enhancing the Quality of Sports in America's Communities". The Stingrays Players will be participating in many exciting activities during this celebration, and the Lady Rays Cheerleaders will be performing throughout the event on the main stage!
The Sports Illustrated 50th Anniversary Tour comes to Myrtle Beach less than a year after Sports Illustrated announced that Myrtle Beach had been chosen as the 50th Anniversary Sports Town for the state of South Carolina. The idea for Sports Illustrated was hatched in Myrtle Beach at Pine Lakes Country Club in the early 1950's. During that fateful week, a train brought 67 Time Life Magazine executives into town, including Henry Booth Luce. The group's agenda included playing a little golf and planning the world's highest circulation sports weekly.
The Stingrays will open their 2004 season on March 30, against the Greenville Riverhawks.
