South Carolina Stingrays News Release

North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays (7-5) erased a two-goal deficit in the third period, but fell to the Florida Everblades (6-5) 5-4 in double overtime in Game 5 of the East Division Finals at the North Charleston Coliseum Friday night. The Stingrays lead the best-of-seven series 3-2 with a chance to close in Game 6 Monday night at 7:30 at Germain Arena in Estero, Florida.

The Stingrays fired up the scoring 12:46 into the first period when defenseman Frankie Simonelli blasted a shot past Everblades netminder Allen York (9 saves on 11 shots) from the right-wing point. Forwards Wayne Simpson and Andrew Rowe added assists. Everblades forward Corey Trivino responded at 17:59 knocking in a rebound off the top of goal crease and over Stingrays goaltender Jeff Jakaitis (L, 41 saves on 46 shots). Seconds later, the Stingrays jumped back in front as forward Patrick Gaul tipped a pass from forward Caleb Herbert over the right pad of York at 18:12. Simonelli chipped in the second assist.

In the middle frame, the Everblades lit the lamp three times to take a 4-2 lead into the second intermission. Defenseman Gleason Fournier ripped in his first goal of the playoffs at 2:43 to even the contest. Forward Brant Harris gave the Everblades their first lead of the night at 6:54 sliding a rebound under a sprawled-out Jakaitis. With Stingrays defenseman Wade Epp and Everblades forward Mike Aviani in the penalty box for roughing, the Everblades capitalized on the 4-on-4 skate with a marker from defenseman Mike Cornell at 12:02. Everblades goalie Daniel Altshuller (W, 30 saves on 32 shots) entered the contest at the start of the period after York suffered an injury.

The Stingrays rallied in the third period with two tallies to force overtime for the second straight game. Simpson swung the momentum to the Stingrays' side of the ice with his fourth goal of the playoffs at the 1:29 mark from defenseman Michal Cajkovsky and Herbert. Cajkovsky registered the game-tying tally on the power play with a drive from the blueline at 11:03 with help from Simpson and Rowe.

After an exciting first overtime session where the Stingrays were awarded two power plays and outshot the Everblades 13-7, Florida's Harris jumped on a loose puck at the bottom of the right-wing circle and buried it between the legs of Jakaitis for the game-winning goal 1:20 into the second session. The Stingrays finished the game 1-for-4 on the power play while the Everblades went 0-for-3.
