Bellingham Slam News Release
BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- A career night by Jacob Stevenson helped the Slam defeat the Sacramento Heatwave for the second straight night, 110-104, in an American Basketball Association contest at Wednesday night at Whatcom Pavilion. Stevenson led all scorers with 41 points, including 33 in the second half.
For the second straight night, the Slam led from start to finish, but Sacramento was much more difficult to put away this time. Trailing by nine going into the second quarter, at 30-21, the Slam built their lead up to 15 points before a small Sacramento run dropped the lead to seven with 1:46 to play in the half. But Bellingham shut down Sacramento for the rest of the quarter to take a 47-36 lead into the intermission. The third quarter was played evenly by both teams, though the Heatwave were able to make it a three-point game with 2:59 left in the quarter on a Dean Brown jumper. But the Slam outscored Sacramento 9-3 the rest of the quarter to go into the final frame with a nine-point lead at 76-67.
Despite committing 29 turnovers for the game, Sacramento was able to keep the deficit to single digits for most of the fourth quarter, and looked poised to take the lead with under two minutes to play. Sacramento's Justin Johnson made it a four point game by hitting a three-pointer with 1:11 to play, but Bellingham converted its free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.
Stevenson's 41 points continued his streak of scoring 20-plus points in every game this far this season. Mike Parker added 28 points and Brandon Hartley scored 16. Brian Dennis recorded his second consecutive double-double, with 12 points and 13 points.
Sacramento, playing without the services of Tuesday night's leading scorer Edward Walden, was led by Johnson's 33 points and seven three-pointers.
The Slam next head to Seattle to take on the King County Royals on Sunday, with a 5 p.m. tip-off scheduled at the Wellness Center at North Seattle Community College. The Slam's next home game is on Thursday, Dec. 21 as they welcome the Tijuana Dragons to town for a pair of games.
