SteepleCats Win Third Straight

July 7, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
North Adams SteepleCats News Release

Behind outstanding pitching and defense, the North Adams SteepleCats won their third consecutive game Tuesday night with a 2-1 victory over the Valley Blue Sox at Joe Wolfe Field. It was the first head-to-head victory for the SteepleCats over the Blue Sox this season after dropping the first two. The win also moved the SteepleCats up to second place in the Northern Division standings.

"To have the pitching and defense only allow one is essentially what did it for us," said Pitching Coach Jonah Bayliss. "It is great to see a team that when one aspect of the game is not there, another aspect picks up the slack."

The SteepleCats sent Peter Lannoo to the mound and he did not disappoint going six innings and allowing only one run off of one hit. He was perfect through the first three innings of play.

"I threw a lot of sinkers today trying to get ground balls and keep the pitch count low and it worked," said Lannoo. "It is great to have a defense behind you that lets you throw strikes and have confidence that your defense is going to make a lot of plays."

The fourth inning began with a leadoff single by Kyle Mottice. Mottice's single turned out to be the only hit the Blue Sox would get on the night. Mottice came around to score the Blue Sox only run of the game tying it at one. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Cameron O'Neill grounded to third. The ball was fielded by C.J. Price who threw home for the force play. 'Cats catcher Kyle Brennan then threw to first to complete the double play.

Lannoo then got Brennan Washington to fly out to center to end the inning. He was then able to shut the Blue Sox down in the fifth and sixth. Edward Haus put the 'Cats on top for good in the fifth when he stole third and then advanced home on an overthrow by Blue Sox catcher Kipp Moore attempting to throw him out.

In the team's current win streak, they have been able to close out every game with a new reliever in each of the last three innings. Tonight's game was no different. Josh Simpson pitched a perfect seventh followed by Brian Stepniak pitching a scoreless eighth. Tanner Bird came on in the ninth and recorded his sixth save of the season.

"To have that sort of routine set up as a reliever really helps," said Coach Bayliss. "Baseball is a game of habits and a game of routines so anytime you can establish one around something it always helps."
