Doyle Spectacular as Stallings Walks it Off

Keene Swamp Bats News Release

KEENE - The SwampBats (13-9) gave up a late lead to the North Adams SteepleCats (13-11) in the 8th inning after a stellar pitching performance from Tommy Doyle (Virginia) but a Brandt Stallings double in 9th allowed the SwampBats to walk it off by a score of 4-3.

Losers of three straight and four out of their last five, the SwampBats came into the matchup in desperate need of a victory if they were going to stay in first place in New England Collegiate Baseball League's (NECBL) Northern Division.

After going 7 2/3 innings without giving up a hit in last start, Doyle's encore was almost equally as impressive.

Through the first three innings, Doyle faced the minimum and struck out 7 of the first 9 SteepleCats batters. He allowed his first hit of the game in the 4th inning on single from Daniel Holst (Southeast Missouri St.) but did not allow North Adams get much after that.

Doyle was pulled after throwing 7 innings, in which he struck 10 batters to just 1 walk, allowed 3 hits, and the one run the SteepleCats got off him was unearned.

Meanwhile, the SwampBats offense got things cooking early with a Parker Sniatynski (St. Louis) triple to lead things off in the 2nd and he would later come home to score the first run of the game on a Jack Morock (Iowa Western) RBI single up the middle.

Patrick Sullivan would add an RBI single in the 4th and Ryan Costello hit his first home run of the season in the 5th to make 3-0.

However, the lead would not hold.

Ivon Clough (Southern New Hampshire) came in relief for Doyle in the 8th inning and it looked as if he was going to continue where Doyle left of after getting a quick first out.

This would not be the case.

Clough would allow back-to-back singles to Nick Riotto (Penn St.) and Dustin Shirley (Dartmouth) to put the tying run on base. He would get Holst to fly out for the second out of the inning, bringing Edward Haus (St. Mary's) to the plate. Ahead in the count, 1 ball, 2 strikes, Clough served one up to Haus who drove it into left field to bring home the tying runs.

Carmen Giampetruzzi (Boston Col.) and Michael LaBeau (Castleton St.) came in for the rest of the 8th and the 9th inning and shut door on the SteepleCats batters.

Morock led the bottom of the 9th off with a double to left, putting the winning run in scoring position. Pinch hitting Jordan Howard (Lee) struck out for the 1st out and Patrick Sullivan (Georgia) struck out for the 2nd out.

Evan McFarland (Lock Haven) was due up but Head Coach Jim Negrych decided to with the pinch hitter Stallings.

Stallings got behind got behind in the count but took a couple of balls to run the count full. North Adams' pitcher Logan Austin (Texas-Arlington) went with the fastball on the 3-2 pitch and Stallings crushed it to left field, getting over the head Jean-Francois Garon (Bradley) to bring home Morock to win the game.

It was the SwampBats first win in over a week and their first in the month of July.
