North Adams SteepleCats News Release
RAIN WASHES AWAY TWO MORE DURING 2-3 WEEK FOR 'CATS
The dreaded, season-long trend of rainouts continued earlier this week, as North Adams saw back-to-back road games washed out, first at Vermont on Tuesday and then again at Danbury on Wednesday.
After the rain, the 'Cats returned home for a season-long four-game homestand. The weekend started on a low note, as visiting Newport drubbed North Adams in a 9-0 shutout loss before Saratoga won a previously suspended game to start Friday.
But North Adams rebounded impressively, starting with a thrilling, come-from-behind victory on Friday in the nightcap of a doubleheader against the Brigade. Trailing by four, 5-1, heading into the seventh, the SteepleCats got two runs back before posting three more in the bottom of the ninth thanks to four hit batsmen and two walks - including a walk-off walk - by the Saratoga closer Cameron Tekker.
After that dramatic victory, the SteepleCats kept that momentum rolling into Saturday, as freshman Brad Anderson (Pepperdine) smashed the first home run for a SteepleCat at home this summer to power North Adams to a 5-4 victory against Keene on Saturday.
The Swamp Bats returned the favor on Sunday, buidling an early five-run advantage that proved to be the difference, as the 'Cats rounded out the week with a 5-3 setback against Keene on Sunday at Joe Wolfe Field.
After enjoying an off day on Monday, North Adams opens up a four-game week starting with a road trip to Saratoga Tuesday. The 'Cats will also be on the road Thursday at Danbury before hosting Holyoke on Friday and then another doubleheader against the Westerners on Saturday.
FOUR STEEPLECATS NAMED TO 2013 ALL-STAR TEAM
Four members of the North Adams SteepleCats will represent the Western Division in next Sunday's 2013 New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) All-Star Game, as announced by the league Sunday.
Starting second baseman Joe Landi (URI) and catcher Kevin Martir (Maryland) will join sophomore southpaws Scott Squier (Hawaii) and Joeanthony Rivera (Barry) up at Robbie Mills Field in Laconia, N.H., next week, as the compilation of the league's top talent square off in the NECBL's version of the Midsummer Classic.
The four All-Stars are one shy of last year's five, but also making the trip will be junior Cody Doyle (Cal State LA), who will participate in the Home Run Derby.
The 20th annual NECBL All-Star game will be held on Sunday, July 21st at beautiful Robbie Mills Field in Laconia, New Hampshire.
The festivities in Laconia begin at 1:25 p.m., starting with the 60-yard dash before the league's best power hitters go at it in the Home Run Derby starting at 2 p.m. Following batting practice and pregame introductions and ceremonies, first pitch is slated for 5:30 p.m.

Believe it or not, in the summer of 2013 we will begin our 12th season as a franchise and as such, we want to make this the most memorable season yet. Our ability to sustain a competitive, successful and memorable team in the smallest market in the NECBL is a testament to the hard work of our volunteers, the tenacity of the players, and the loyalty of our fan base. It is our mission to continue to put a quality team on the field and to create a memorable experience for all fans.
The 2012 season was filled with many wonderful memories and highlights, both on and off the field. Some of the off-field activities included:
- Nearly 20,000 fans coming to the ballpark.
- Visiting all of the local elementary schools to read, meet, and play with our youth.
- Distributed over 3,000 tickets to elementary school students.
- Bringing parents and friends in from all over the country to learn that our area is a special place to visit and live.
- Providing opportunities for our players off field to help them develop life skills through team building and exposure to a variety of activities.
- Sustaining the SteepleCats deep commitment to our community through player participation in our communities and our schools.
As we begin to plan for the 2013 season, the SteepleCats will need the support of our community once again. As a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, the SteepleCats are only able to exist and function through the generous support it receives from community businesses, charitable donations of all sizes, and the generous time from our volunteers and host families.
