North Adams SteepleCats News Release

After a tough 3-2 loss in game one, the North Adams SteepleCats came right back and defeated the Valley Blue Sox 8-3 in game two of Wednesday night's double header at Mackenzie Stadium in Holyoke. The SteepleCats improved to 18-17 with the double header split.

"A great effort," said Head Coach Mike Armstrong on the game two victory. "We played hard all seven innings, limited our walks, had good swings, and played good defense most importantly."

The SteepleCats were able to score in the first inning in both games. In game one, Daniel Holst led off with a single and came in to score on a wild pitch. The 'Cats added another run that inning when Edward Haus singled in Dustin Shirley to take a 2-0 lead. Holst led off game two with a walk. He stole second and then scored on a single by Shirley to put the 'Cats up 1-0.

Game one starter Robbie Buffis faced the minimum through the first three innings for the 'Cats. He gave up two runs off of one hit through four and a third innings pitched. The 'Cats got five innings out of their game two starter Ben Olson. He gave up three runs off of five hits and struck out four.

"Robbie pitched great," said Coach Armstong. "Very encouraged. He is going to definitely help us out in the pen. It is a really good outing for him to build on."

In game two, the SteepleCats continued to add runs and ultimately built a 5-1 lead. The Blue Sox added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 5-3. With one out in the bottom of the sixth, the Blue Sox had runners on first and second with one out. 'Cats catcher John Mazza threw out Kipp Moore trying to steal second for the second out. C.J. Stubbs then hit a line drive to center field. Daniel Holst charged in and made a spectacular diving catch to end the inning.

"When we are winning and playing our best, our defense is our signature item," said Coach Armstrong.

The 'Cats put the game out of reach in the seventh on a two run single by Mazza giving the 'Cats a 7-3 lead. Kyle Brennan followed with an RBI single to make it 8-3.
