SteepleCats Sweep Season Series with Mountaineers

July 31, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
North Adams SteepleCats News Release

The North Adams SteepleCats scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning before a single out was made. It ended up being all the SteepleCats would need in a 4-3 victory over the Vermont Mountaineers. With the victory, the SteepleCats improved to 23-19 on the season and took sole possession of second place in the Northern Division. The SteepleCats also improved to 5-0 against the Mountaineers on the season.

"We try not to look at the broader picture," said Pitching Coach Jonah Bayliss. "We try not to look at the 5-0 and look more in regard to each individual game. For us it is about showing up every day and trying to win a game."

The top of the fifth began with the Mountaineers leading 1-0. CJ Price doubled to lead off the inning. Kyle Brennan was hit by the pitch and John Mazza singled to load the bases. Nick Riotto singled, scoring Price and advancing all three bases runners to tie the game at one. Daniel Holst singled, scoring Brennan. Mazza came in to score on an error and then Riotto scored on a dropped third strike making it 4-1 SteepleCats.

Braxton Wilks pitched well in his start for the SteepleCats. Even though he walked seven batters, he was able to hold the Mountaineers to only one run off of four hits. In the bottom of the third, the Mountaineers loaded the bases with nobody out. Wilks got Michael Osinski to pop out to second. He then struck out Will Morgan and Keegan Meyn get out of the jam. It ended up being a major turning point in the game.

"On paper it was not our prettiest outing as a staff," said Coach Bayliss. "Sometimes pitching comes down to making your pitch whenever that pitch may occur and recognizing those moments and saying 'this is the moment where I am going to win and not let this moment define me but I will define the moment.'"

With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Ryan Fineman hit a two run home run to cut the SteepleCats lead to 4-2. The Mountaineers added another run that inning to make it 4-3.

Andrew Camiolo entered the game in the seventh and answered the rally pitching a scoreless inning. Brian Stepniak followed with a pair of scoreless innings in a six out save which allowed the SteepleCats to rest their closer Tanner Bird.

"For Stepniak to be able to have the opportunity to come in and throw two innings and just shut them down and pick up the save is just huge for him."
