Mystic 3, Plymouth 2
PLYMOUTH - The Mystic Schooners picked up a franchise record 27 wins Sunday night with a 3-2 victory over the Plymouth Pilgrims at Forges Field.
Martin Figueroa got the job done on both ends of the field and started things off offensively for Mystic in the second inning. He doubled to lead it off and then was singled in by Aaron Hill to give the Schooners a 1-0 lead at the end of two.
The Pilgrims had a chance to take a lead in the third inning. With one man on, Riley Delgado lifted a ball over the left field fence but Figueroa leaped at the right time and stuck out his glove to make a snow cone robbery catch and bring it back to keep the Schooners on top.
The Pilgrims would tie it up in the fourth when a double play with nobody out scored a runner from third to make the score 1-1 heading to the fifth inning.
With one out in the fifth, Toby Handley laced a single to set things up for Scotty Bradley. Bradley lined a ball into the right-center gap scoring Handley all the way from first with an RBI double. Later in the inning with two outs, Ryan Ramiz singled in Bradley to give the Schooners a 3-1 lead at the end of five innings.
It took until the seventh inning for the Pilgrims to get their second run of the game. It came with a solo home run off the bat of Brian Sharp.
Pitching stood out above everything else for the Schooners, which has been a trend in their recent games. Zach Ours got the start and threw four innings giving up just one run on two hits. Danny Marsh went three innings and picked up the win, he struck out three and gave up a run on two hits. Mason Kukowski and Carson Teel, who picked up the save combined for the final two shutout innings.
With the win the Schooners improve to 27-15, their highest mark for wins in a single season. They will be back in action on Monday to take on the Danbury Westerners in what will be a big game for Danbury. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30.
