SteepleCats Stay Hot

June 15, 2019 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
North Adams SteepleCats News Release

Back at Joe Wolfe field as the SteepleCats faced off against the Vermont Mountaineers for the first time this season. Alex Gomes took the mound for the Cats and produced a near carbon copy of his first appearance against Keene as he went 5 innings of shutout baseball allowing only 3 hits in total. On the other side for Vermont Enzo Stefanoni had a no-hitter going into the 5th inning. That's when the SteepleCat bats woke up, started by a leadoff single by Sam Punzi the Cats would go on to plate 5 runs. Some stellar defense by a familiar face in Matt Koperniak, who scored a run, tallied two hits and what proved to be a huge RBI single later in the game, as well as a litany of relievers for the Cats saw them going into the ninth inning with a commanding 7-2 lead. Daniel Corvo came in for some work as the unofficial closer for the Cats. He would struggle allowing the first two batters to have free passes, then a ground ball got him his first out though it came at the cost of a run scoring. Then after a big strikeout the Mountaineers looked to be on their way out. But back to back singles and a huge double quickly made it a 7-5 game. Then with Aaron Simpson, the 3-hitter in the Vermont order up, Corvo looked to finally shut the door. However, Simpson had other ideas as he represented the go-ahead run at the plate, he got a pitch to hit as he drove the ball to deep left-center field. But crashing into the wall to save the day for the Cats was Tanner Thomas as he ran head on into the wall to complete the catch and finally bring an end to a chaotic 9th inning that nearly saw a 5-run lead evaporate. The SteepleCats improve to 6-1 on the season as Vermont drops to 2-4 on the year. The SteepleCats with that win remain at the top of the North division and will look to improve to 7-1 as they will head to Valley on the 16th looking for some revenge after falling to them at home for their lone loss of the season. Mason Ronan will have the ball as he tries to build on a very successful first outing for the Cats against the team that is nipping at their heals in the standings. But for now the Cats claw out a big win and continue their furious pace.
