Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - Newport (3-3) defeated the Ocean State Waves (3-5) on Newport Little League Night at Cardines Field. For the Gulls, Brian Gursky picks up the win as Thad Harris picks up the loss for the Waves.

Colton Bender got things going for the Gulls in the bottom of the third with an RBI double that scored both Jacob Gustin and Greg Cavaliere. Bender would later score on a single by Ryan Toohers. The Gulls would tack on two more runs in the inning thanks to a two-run shot by Austin James.

The Waves, however, would battle back after a throwing error allowed Casey Dana to score in the fourth. Later in the fifth inning, Dana would come through with an RBI single scoring both Daniel Seres and Will McGillis. However, James would enhance the Gulls lead in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double to make it 6-3.

The Waves were not done yet as they tacked on runs on in the sixth and seventh to make it a one run game. However, Gustin would come through in the bottom of the eighth for the Gulls with an RBI single to make it 7-5.

Newport would then send Jimmy Kingsbury to the mound in the ninth to seal the win. Kingsbury picked up one strikeout and retired all three batters he faced to pick up the save.

Newport will now head to Danbury on Saturday for a 6:30 matchup against the undefeated Westerners.
