GENEVA, ILLINOIS - The Chicago Steel, member team of the United States Hockey League ("USHL"), announced Wednesday that defenseman Jere Astren (Helsinki, Finland) has verbally committed to play for the University of Wisconsin (Big Ten). Astren, 20, is the sixteenth player on the Steel's active roster to commit to an NCAA Division I hockey program.

The 6-1, 181-pound left-shot defender made his Steel debut in last Saturday's home opener vs. Team USA. It was Astren's regular season debut in North America.

"One of Jere's goals when coming to Chicago was to earn a college commitment," said Steel head coach Dan Muse. "He has worked very hard for this opportunity and we are thrilled for him and his commitment to Wisconsin. He is a very determined young man. We are looking forward to working with him throughout the season and helping him prepare for the next step in his career. We expect him to be a major contributor as we work toward reaching our team's goals this season."

Astren joins left wing Max Zimmer as Steel players committed to play in Madison for Badgers head coach Mike Eaves.

"I am so excited for the opportunity to play for Wisconsin," said Astren, 20. "Playing here in the Midwest is great, and Wisconsin has a great program and school."

The Chicago Steel are home at Fox Valley Ice Arena for a two-game weekend set against the Tri-City Storm. Friday's game begins at 7:30 p.m., while Saturday's will start at 7:00. To purchase tickets, call 855-51-STEEL, visit the box office inside Fox Valley Ice Arena or visit ChicagoSteelHockeyTeam.com.
