Gary Steelheads News Release

GARY, Indiana (March 21, 2006) - The Gary Steelheads visit the Qwest Center in Boise, Idaho Tuesday night to face the Idaho Stampede in the final first round playoff game for both teams. The Steelheads have won both of their playoff games, while the Stampede are still seeking their first playoff win.

This year's CBA finalists are being determined by quarter points earned in a three-game round-robin playoff with the three playoff teams of the opposite conference. With wins over Yakama and Sioux Falls, the Steelheads have earned 13 out of a possible 14 quarter points. This has assured them a position in the CBA Finals. The Steelheads earlier earned the home court advantage throughout the playoffs, with a league high 197 quarter points accumulated during the regular season.

Meantime, the Stampede have lost playoff games at Rockford and Albany. They enter this game with 3½ quarter points and have been mathematically eliminated from advancing beyond the first round.

The Steelheads come into this game after one of their most impressive wins of the season last Saturday night, a 124-92 victory over the defending CBA champion Sioux Falls Skyforce at the Genesis Center. Gary earned all seven quarter points with the victory and nailed down a position in the CBA Finals.

The Steelheads started quickly against Sioux Falls, winning the first quarter 29-16. Then Gary added back-to-back quarter victories of 32-23, before the Skyforce mounted a comeback. The Steelheads prevailed in a very competitive fourth quarter, 31-30.

The Steelheads placed seven players in double figures, with three of them contributing double-double performances. Forward Randy Holcomb and swingman Robert Griffin paced the attack with 23 points apiece. For Griffin, it was a CBA career high. Guard Brian Chase scored 17 points with 10 assists, while forward Carl Mitchell added 13 points and 13 rebounds and center Chris Alexander tossed in 11 points with 11 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Guard Eric Chatfield scored 12 points and handed out 6 assists, while forward Marlowe Currie chipped in 10 points with 7 rebounds.

The Steelheads have now won five straight, and 15 of their last 19 games. Following the game Tuesday night, Gary will return home to prepare for the CBA Finals.
