Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, ID- The Idaho Steelheads (2-2-3) never trailed en route to a 4-1 home win over the Utah Grizzlies (4-2-1); an Idaho win that snapped Utah's three-game win streak. Forward Geoff Irwin recorded a goal, an assist, and a fighting major in the hockey game giving him a "Gordie Howe Hat Trick"; Tyler Beskorowany earned the win in net for Idaho. Adam Huxley also made his Steelheads season debut after beginning the campaign with the American Hockey League's Chicago Wolves.
Early in the first period, Adam Huxley threw a hit in the offensive zone and valiantly held the puck in the zone for Idaho, which allowed Dustin Molle to fire a shot from the point that was redirected into the Utah net to give the Steelheads a 1-0 lead. Justin Taylor and Molle were credited with assists on McKnight's first goal of the season.
Utah evened the score, however, at 11:48 of the first period when defenseman Brock Wilson rolled a backhand shot through traffic that bounce off the right pad of Beskorowany and into the net.
The Steelheads were responsible for the only goal of the second period, as Geoff Irwin redirected a Steve Oleksy point shot in the slot for his second goal of the season; Cody Purves also assisted on the goal for his first professional point.
Moments after Irwin's goal, Adam Huxley reminded Steelheads fans what they had been missing this season as he and Utah's six-foot-eight-inch heavyweight Riley Emmerson engaged in a memorable fight.
The Steelheads added a pair in the third period; the first of which was a point shot on the power play from Marty Flichel. Flichel's second goal of the season drew assists from John Swanson and Mark Derlago, and gave Idaho a 3-1 lead.
At 17:48 of the third period, Taylor took a pass from Flichel in the left circle, fired a shot, and was denied by Utah goalie Andrew Engelage; Taylor, though, picked up his own rebound, and deposited the puck over the goal line to give Idaho a 4-1 lead, which is how the game would end. Irwin and Flichel assisted on Taylors first of the season. Taylor had not scored since the 2008-09 season after missing all of last season with an injury.
Tyler Beskorowany earned the win in net for Idaho; he stopped 24 of 25 shots and is 2-2-2 on the season. Andrew Engelage, who had not started a game for Utah prior to this week's series in Boise, is now 2-1-0 for Utah after stopping 28 of 32 shots in the Grizzlies second regulation loss of the season.
Next up for the Idaho Steelheads: the Victoria Salmon Kings. Idaho and Victoria will meet November 3, 5, and 6 in Victoria. The Steelheads return home to begin a three-game set with the Stockton Thunder on November 10th.
