Gary Steelheads News Release
GARY, Indiana (January 5, 2006) - The Gary Steelheads hit the road for the first of three games in 72 hours, visiting the Albany Patroons at the Washington Avenue Armory on Thursday night. The teams will meet a second time the following night. Gary remains in second place in the CBA's Eastern Conference, while the Patroons hold the third spot.
Gary has moved back above .500 at 10-9 for the season, and is likely playing its best basketball to date this season. In their most recent two games, the Steelheads grabbed early control against their opponents and built huge leads on their way to victory.
Against the Rockford Lightning a week ago Wednesday, Gary lead by as many as 30 points early in the third quarter on the way to a 118-102 win. Against the Patroons last Friday night, the lead was as high as 39 points, with Gary prevailing 119-95. The only blemish on those wins was that, despite the size of the victory margins, the Steelheads could amass only five quarter points each game.
Gary set a club record for three-point baskets in the victory over Albany, hitting an incredible 17-of-20 shots from beyond the arc. The previous record of 14 three-point baskets came in a game against the Sioux Falls Skyforce on December 1st, 2001. Guard Eric Chatfield hit all five of his three-point attempts, while guard Jimmie "Snap" Hunter hit 4-of-5 and swingman Robert Griffin connected on 6-of-8. Gary remains the leading three-point shooting team in the CBA at .418.
Following this game and the rematch on Friday night, the Steelheads will return home Saturday night for their third game in this string against the Dakota Wizards at the Genesis Center. Game time will be 7:05 CST.
