Gary Steelheads News Release

GARY, Indiana (December 28, 2005) "" The Rockford Lightning brought a seven game winning streak with them to the Genesis Center, where the Gary Steelheads were focused and ready. The result was a 118-102 Steelheads victory, in a game that was not as close as the final score indicated.

From the opening tip, the Steelheads took control, scoring 24 of the first 27 points of the game. By the end of the first quarter, Gary had a 39-16 lead. Rockford bounced back to take the second quarter 24-21, but still trailed at half 60-40. The Steelheads won the third quarter 35-29, building the lead up to as high as 30 points. Rockford salvaged the fourth quarter 33-23.

Gary placed six players in double figures, paced by Jimmie "Snap" Hunter with 23 points and 9 assists. Randy Holcomb added 22, and newly-acquired Edmund Saunders added a career-high 20 points with 9 rebounds. Guard Eric Chatfield contributed a double-double performance of 15 points and 12 assists, while center Chris Alexander registered his third straight double-digit rebounding performance with a team-high 12 caroms. He missed a double-double by one with a nine-point effort.

The Lightning were paced by former CBA Player of the Week Roger Powell, whose 31 points were his second best scoring performance in the CBA to date. But beyond that, Rockford had just three other players in double figures. While the Lighting shot .500 from the field, Gary connected at a .583 clip and at .455 from three point range. Rockford used full-court pressure over half of the game, forcing 25 Steelheads turnovers. However, the Lighting committed 22 turnovers of their own.

The Steelheads host the Albany Patroons at the Genesis Center Friday night. Game time is 7:05PM.
