Idaho Steelheads News Release
BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads scored five goals in their first seven shots to beat the Ice Dogs for the second night in a row in front of 5,403 fans at the Bank of America Centre Saturday night, by the final score of 8-4. Thirteen Steelheads got at least one point on the night, led by Dan Shermerhorn's 4 points (2 goals, 2 assists).
Long Beach netminder Danielle Dube, in her first appearance on Idaho ice, gave up the five goals on just seven shots before getting pulled from the game. Steelheads goaltender Jason Cugnet recorded his 22nd win of the season with his 14 saves.
Just like last night, the Steelheads got on the board first. Shermerhorn was in the right place at the right time and scored an unassisted goal on a Long Beach turnover at 3:44. Cory Morgan scored next, a power play goal at 6:18, assisted by Joe Rybar and Scott Swanson. Scott Burt got help from Shermerhorn and Ben Keup to put his 4th goal of the season away at 9:25. With the Steelheads up by 3 goals, Long Beach came back with two beauties. First J.P. O'Connor scored on a breakaway at 9:37, fed by Jamie O'Leary and Craig Lyons. Then, the Ice Dogs closed the gap to one with an amazing goal by Tyler Willis who had slid about forty feet and took a pass from Jeff Marshal to put it away at 12:20 while still laying on the ice. Idaho scored two more before the period ended with Shermerhorn sneaking one in behind Dube, his second of the night, assisted by Keup and Jonathan Shockey. The fifth Idaho goal came from Cory Morgan who also scored two on the night at 17:59, assisted by Rory McDade.
Just like last night, Long Beach's starting goaltender was pulled and Mike Buzak was brought in after the Steelheads' fifth goal.
At 3:02 into the second period, Idaho struck again when Adam Copeland brought the puck in from the blue line and deked out Buzak to make it 6-2. Martin Vasut and Derek Paget recorded the assists. Craig Lyons scored for Long Beach with the one-man advantage with a slapshot that got past Cugnet from outside the point, assisted by Chris Peyton at 5:42. Nobody else scored until Rybar netted one from Vasut with 28 seconds to go in the period.
Lyons tallied the Ice Dogs' fourth goal with his second power play goal, this one assisted by Zdenek Vanc and Pat Brush at 3:26 of the third period. The final goal of the game was also a power play goal from league-leading goal scorer Marty Flichel who recorded his 25th at 10:39, assisted by Swanson and Shermerhorn.
The West Coast Hockey League's first-place Steelheads are now 18-1-0 at home, and 30-10-3 (63 points) on the season.
Next up for the Steelheads, a two-game set against the Bakersfield Condors starting Monday, January 27th. Puck drops at 7:00 p.m.
