Idaho Steelheads News Release

Anchorage, AK - B.J. Crombeen netted a power play goal late in the second period and goaltender Steve Silverthorn made 15 saves to help the Steelheads to a 1-0 win over the Alaska Aces in Game One of the National Conference finals in front of 5,391 fans at Sullivan Arena on Monday night.

Silverthorn has now posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time in his playoff career, while picking up his third blanking of the postseason, as the Steelheads (9-4) win the opening game of the series for the first time in this playoff year. Meanwhile, the Aces (8-2) see their five-game winning streak go by the way side.

Late in the second period, the Steelheads converted on a five-minute power play, and scored the game's only goal on Crombeen's deflection from the crease that snuck past Aces' goaltender Derek Gustafson (19 saves). Defenseman Lars Helminen, who fired the initial shot from the right point, and Lance Galbraith grabbed the helpers on Crombeen's third of the playoffs at 16:05. The Steelheads found themselves on the power play because Aces' forward Ryan MacMurchy took a major boarding penalty plus a game misconduct for checking Steelheads' captain Marty Flichel from behind into the boards.

In a scoreless first period, the Steelheads out-shot the Aces 7-5.

There was no scoring in the third period, and the final shots favored the Steelheads 20-15. The Steelheads power play finished one-for-five, while the Aces ended zero-for-four.

Game Two of this series is on Tuesday, May 8 with the opening face-off scheduled for 9:15 p.m. MDT.
