Steelhawks Look to Hammer Down
May 13, 2015 - Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL)
Lehigh Valley Steelhawks News Release
Allentown, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (5-2, 4-2 PIFL) will take on the Alabama Hammers (3-4) this Sunday in the teams first matchup against each other in the 2015 season. The Steelhawks are returning home after suffering a disappointing loss in Columbus last weekend (45- 35). The Hawks hope to kickoff their three game home stance with a big win and get back on track in the season second half.
This matchup is the first of two games between the Hawks and the Hammers this season. After an uncharacteristically cold turnout last game, the Hawks plan to regenerate their offensive game this week. With Shane McSweeny sidelined by injury, Zach Zulli took the reins as QB against Columbus. A game time decision will put one of these men in the position of playmaker this week. Despite being injured, McSweeny still leads the league in rushing yards with 277. The Steelhawks as a team lead the league in total rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. Furthermore, the Hawks expect their defense (second in the league for scoring) to continue to be a dominant force.
Despite their recent struggles this season, the Hammers are not to be overlooked. Leading the league in passing offense, the Hammers will definitely challenge the Hawks' passing defense. Alabama's Garrett Sutphen leads the league in total offensive yards (1973 passing yards) and total offensive touchdowns (37 passing-7 rushing) . With such a strong pass game, the Hawks will need to be alert for interception opportunities throughout the game. DB's Jesse Cooper and Joe Powell each have six interceptions on the season.
Coming off a tough loss in Columbus, the Steelhawks hope to bounce back this weekend as they return to Embassy Bank Field inside the PPL Center. For the first time all season, the Hawks lost the turnover battle against the Lions last Saturday throwing two interceptions and only getting one turnover themselves. The team plans to implement the lessons learned in Columbus into this week's game strategy in order to come out on top against the Hammers.
Kickoff is at 3:00 pm this Sunday and the game is presented by Embassy Bank. Sunday will also be "Salute to Heroes Night" where the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks will recognize those in the "hero industry", including firefighters, police officers, medical personnel and men and women in all branches of the United States' armed forces. Fans will receive American flags and the first 1,500 fans will receive a free sport bottle upon entry courtesy of Embassy Bank!
