Lehigh Valley Steelhawks News Release

Bethlehem, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (2-0) pulled out another come from behind victory behind the efforts of their defense. The Steelhawks beat the Harrisburg Stampede (1-2) 35-27, after getting the strong second half they needed.

The Steelhawks struggled in the first half, both offensively and defensively. Both sides had numerous penalties negating points on the board. The first quarter started with the Steelhawks on defense after the kickoff. Harrisburg QB E.J. Nemeth started the scoring with a short quarterback keeper on the Stampede's first possession. But the Steelhawks blocked the extra point attempt and DB Dwayne Hollis returned the ball for two points, making the score 6-2, Harrisburg leading. A crazy set of downs for both teams ensued and the quarter ended with the Stampede still leading 6-2.

The second quarter again saw both teams turning the ball over on downs. The first real excitement for the Steelhawks came when FB Jeff Link scored on a very athletic 20 yard run, hurdling a Harrisburg defender in the process. Harrisburg would answer with their own touchdown, a long pass from Nemeth to WR Chris Schubert. They would add another score before the half ended. Entering halftime, the Steelhawks trailed 20-8.

The second half proved to be Lehigh Valley's strongest. Link ( 10 rushes, 53 yards, Two TD) kicked the third quarter off with a six yard touchdown run to cut the lead to six. The Steelhawks would take the lead, 21-20 when Hollis had another huge return, this time returning a missed field goal 50 yards for the touchdown. The Steelhawks defense became game changers, getting two interceptions on Harrisburg's next two possessions - DB Stanley Dunbar and DB Stefaun Whitehead came up with the big plays - but the offense was unable to put more points on the board. Lehigh Valley held a slim one point lead entering the fourth quarter.

For the second game in a row, the Steelhawks have played remarkable fourth quarters. The defense continued to make big plays and the offense came alive. QB Adam Bednarik connected with WR Matt Coston (6 catches, 113 yards, two td) on deep touchdown passes on consecutive possessions. The defense held the Stampede to only one touchdown in the entire second half and then clinched the game late, coming up with two more interceptions on Harrisburg's last two possessions, Hollis and Whitehead each getting another.

After a bye week for the holiday, the team returns to Stabler Arena for their next home game on April 26th, 7:00pm kickoff; that game is deemed "Friends and Family Night" presented by ESSA Bank & Trust. A special drawstring backpack will be given away to the first 1,000 fans through the door.
