Steelhawks Fall to Lions

Lehigh Valley Steelhawks News Release

Bethlehem, PA: After starting the season off with four straight wins, the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (4-4) are on a four game skid, losing for the fourth straight week, this time at the hands of the Columbus Lions (4-4), 42-54. Columbus capitalized on Lehigh Valley mistakes and did a good job of managing the game; while the Steelhawks were not able to muster much offense of their own.

The Steelhawks kept the game close for the first half, only trailing by three at halftime. Lion's FB Kendrick Perry (88 yards rushing, two td) began his strong evening with a four yard touchdown run on the first drive of the game. The Steelhawks would answer with a touchdown of their own, a 20 yd pass from QB Adam Bednarik (115 yds, 2 passing tds, 1 rushing) to WR Richie Martin (4 catches for 115 yds, 4 tds). But the Lions' would be able to drive back down the field and retake the lead on a Chris McCoy quarterback keeper from one yard out.

The first quarter would end with the Steelhawks driving. Bednarik would find WR Brandon Renford (8 catches for 70 yds, 1 td) in the endzone to tie the game at 14 early in the second quarter. The Steelhawks would be able to hold the Lion's to a field goal on their next possession and would take back the lead, 21-17, on a Bednarik keeper. Columbus would only need two plays and 21 seconds though to answer with a touchdown of their own; making the score 24-21 Lions' as the second quarter drew to a close.

Lehigh Valley's offense couldn't seem to get things going in the third quarter. A fumble on the first play of the third quarter and constant pressure on the quarterback led to a scoreless quarter. Their defense would keep them in the game, only giving up ten points to the Lions in the third.

After another Lions' touchdown early in the fourth, the Steelhawks would finally start putting points on the board. QB Shane McSweeny (105 yds, 3 tds), who came in for Bednarik, would connect with Martin for three touchdowns in the quarter. But it would be too little too late. Columbus would add 20 to their scoreboard total, bringing the final score to 54-42 Lions'. Columbus was able to utilize their rushing game to extend their drives and run the clock down at the end of the game. Perry would end up with 21 carries on the night.

The Steelhawks are still holding onto second place in the National Conference, now two games behind Trenton, who has a bye this week. The team is currently on a five game road trip; the next stop is in Richmond, VA to take on the rival Raiders in a matchup for second place in the Conference. They return to the Lehigh Valley for their final home game, and their 2014 PIFL regular season finale, for a June 28th matchup with rival Richmond Raiders. It will also be Fan Appreciation Night.
