Georgia Fire News Release
ROME, GA (June 1, 2014) - With a chance to pull even on the season, the Georgia Fire (3-5) of the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) got stomped out Sunday afternoon in a 72-53 loss to the Richmond Raiders (3-5).
Different opponent same story for the Fire, a club that has now lost three straight overall and sitting firmly in last place in the PIFL's American Conference.
With an ailing Cecil Lester licking his injury wounds from last week's game Chris Mitchell picked up his second start of the season on Sunday, first under center since back in Week 3. The rust on Mitchell's arm showed as he managed to complete 11 of 15 passes for just 66 yards and no touchdowns before ultimately getting relieved in the second half by Lester.
Already down by thirteen at the half, on their initial drive of the second half Lester rallied Georgia to within seven but in what only appeared in a flicker of light Richmond continued their assault scoring eleven plus points unanswered on two different occasions. Cecil tried his best Firefly impression throwing four touchdowns in just a half of play.
Coming off a week in which he earned the PIFL Offensive Player of the Week, Raiders QB Phil Konopka continued his hot streak completing 21 of 28 passes for 222 yards along with a personal season best seven touchdowns. His go to receiver on the night was Herb Jones hauling in 11 receptions for 102 yards and three TD's.
The biggest MVP on the night for the streaking Raiders was their defensive front. Notching five sacks, including 3.5 alone by DL Devin Jones, it didn't matter which Georgia QB was under center as both of them spent the afternoon under fire from Richmond.
Sunday's victory put's Richmond just one game behind the second playoff spot in the PIFL American Conference while Georgia will have to till tomorrow when Nashville hosts Alabama to see how much of an impact their loss has.
Next Saturday June 7th at 7:30 PM the Fire will host the first-place Venom (5-2) in another conference clash that will have heavy playoff implications for both clubs. To find your spot inside The Rome Forum Civic Center, contact the box office at 706-291-5281 or log on to www.georgiafire.us.
