Steelhawks and Explosion Meet Again

Bethlehem, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (2-1) will play host to the Erie (0-2) this weekend as the Explosion come to the Valley for a rematch of each team's season opener. In the first round of the PA Classic, the Hawks came from behind in the last 90 seconds to steal the win, 50-43. This week is Friends & Family Night presented by ESSA Bank & Trust; the first 1,000 fans will get a Free promotional water bottle.

The Steelhawks are coming off a big home opener win in their inter-league matchup with the Marion Blue Racers of the X-League. The team put up 85 points as they ran away with the game in the second half. The offense scored nine touchdowns. QB Shane McSweeny threw for 139 yards and four touchdowns; QB Zach Zulli came in under center and rushed for 29 yards and three touchdowns. WR Jerrell Jones was the favorite target on the night, catching seven passes for 85 yards and two touchdowns. WR Brandon Renford also chipped in with two touchdowns.

Lehigh Valley's defense had another great performance, creating eight turnovers, and converting three for immediate scores. DB Jesse Cooper had three take aways, tying the Steelhawks All-Time interception record; and DB David Castillo tallied two interceptions. DL Larry Ford tallied 1.5 sacks in the win, breaking the Steelhawks All-Time sack record.

Erie has been going with a two quarterback offense; QB Jeff Sinclair has the most passing yards (236) on a 58% completion rate, and four touchdowns. QB Mason Espinosa has 171 yards passing and two touchdowns. WR Alfonso Hoggard has been the most dangerous weapon; recording 165 yards and two touchdowns receiving, and 122 all purpose yards on kick return. Defensive leaders for the Explosion include: LB Jon D'Angelo (6.5 Tackles, .5 sacks, .5 tfl) and DB Jerome Junior (5.5 tackles. 1 fumble recovery).

The Steelhawks created four turnovers in their first meeting with Explosion. Combined with the eight they created last week, fans can look for the defense to be hungry to continue to create points on turnovers.

The Steelhawks are on the road to nearby rival Trenton next week. They will be back on Embassy Bank field inside the PPL Center on Saturday, May 2nd when they face the Columbus Lions. The game is sponsored by Capital Blue Cross and is deemed the "Capital Blue Cross Live Fearless Night," and water bottles will be given out.
