Birmingham, Ala. - The Alabama Steeldogs fell to the Tennessee Valley Vipers, 35-33, Saturday night in front of an announced crowd of 6,589.
The Steeldogs failed to convert on a two-point conversion with seven second left in the game after receiver Jon Olinger caught the ball and fell out of bounds.
Steeldogs quarterback Mitch Tanney finished the game 30-of-45 for 283 yards and four scores. The Steeldogs (5-7) turned the ball over twice in the first half, however, and finished with four total fumbles on the night.
Tennessee Valley (5-7) was led on offense by Joel Babb, who finished with five catches for 108 yards and one score. Vipers' quarterback Chris Gunn led the way on the ground with two rushing touchdowns in the win.
The Vipers' Quentin Burrell had a solid night on defense for Tennessee Valley, finishing with 11 total tackles and one fumble recovery. Rajohn Myles led the Steeldogs defensively with six total tackles and one sack.
The Steeldogs and Vipers now have matching records at 5-7, but Tennessee Valley moves one place ahead of the Steeldogs to ninth in the National Conference. Lubbock (6-6) takes over the eighth and final playoff spot in the conference with a win over Texas.
Alabama travels to Oklahoma City next weekend to face the Yard Dawgz (6-6) in a crucial National Conference playoff match-up. Tennessee Valley heads to the West Coast to take on non-conference opponent Everett.
