Chicago Steel News Release
Bensenville, ILâ The Chicago Steel won their two games this past weekend to give themselves their first winning streak of the season.
On Friday night, the Steel traveled to Indianapolis to face the only team in the league yet to lose a game at home, the Indiana Ice. The Ice lit the lamp first which isn't a good omen for the Steel as they are 0-9 when failing to score this first goal this season. Despite being behind the Steel continued to battle. TJ Fox (Oswego, NY) finally found the back of the net to tie the score at 1 after the first period. Rookie's Ryan Devito (Niles, IL) and Pat Bowen (Marshfield, MA) were credited with the assists. The Ice would capitalize at the 13:14 mark of the second period to go ahead 2-1. The Steel would answer with four goals of their own to win the game 5-2. Eric Slais (Fenton, MO) from Cody Lampl (Ketchum, ID) and Ryan Olidis (Uxbridge, Ont) scored on the power play to tie the game at 2. David Marshall (Buffalo, MN) tipped in an Eric Lampe (Madison, WI) shot to give the Steel the 3-2 lead going into the third period. Kevin Swallow (Stanwood, MI) and Matt Clackson (Pittsburgh, PA) each scored on breakaway's to seal the victory for the Steel. Olidis was credited with an assist on the Clackson goal. Sauer made 25 saves to earn the victory.
The Steel hosted the Green Bay Gamblers for a late Sunday afternoon tilt. The Gamblers, playing their third game in three nights, snuck one past Steel goaltender, Billy Sauer (Rochester, NY) late in the first period. Once again the Steel would have to battle from behind to earn the victory. At the 13:51 mark of the second period, Slais found the back of the net to tie the game at 1. Just fourteen seconds later Bowen blistered a shot from the point past the stunned Gambler goalie. M. Clackson and Chris Walsh (Northville, MI) were credited with assists on the go ahead goal. Swallow would give the Steel a two goal lead as the second period ended with assists going to Fox and Slais. Green Bay would score two quick goals in the third period to tie the game at 3. However, Fox would score the eventual game winner 7:23 in the third period with Swallow and Slais assisting on the goal. The Steel would survive an onslaught of shots from the Gamblers and win the game, 4-3. Sauer stood tall in net with 29 saves.
The STEEL will battle the defending Tier 1 National Champions Waterloo Blackhawks in a home and home series this Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's game is at the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville and the puck drops at 7:05pm.
