WEST DES MOINES, IA - Backstopped by a 26-save performance and six stops in the shootout by Louis-Felix Charrois, the Chicago Steel (3-1-0-0, 6 pts.) defeated the Des Moines Buccaneers (1-2-0-1; 3 pts.) 4-3 in a shootout at the MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex Friday night.

Forward Jackson Crowder scored his first goal of the season, as did Ashton Schultz, who tallied his first score in his season debut while celebrating his 19th birthday. Easton Pace scored his first goal with the Steel. Schultz opened the shootout with a goal, followed by a score in the fifth round by Kolin Sisson. Henry Major scored in the eighth round before Charrois made the winning stop.

The eight-round shootout is the longest for the Steel since Nov. 3, 2023, when Chicago and Green Bay had a nine-round duel in Geneva.

Des Moines kept the Steel penned in their own zone for most of the first half of the opening period and its sustained pressure generated a power play chance under eight minutes into Friday's action.

Just over one minute into their power play, Joseph Argentina pounced on a rebound in the slot to put the Buccaneers up 1-0.

Immediately after the ensuing faceoff, Des Moines rushed into the attacking end and forced Charrois to make several difficult stops.

Chicago went to its first power play at the midway point of the first period but couldn't connect.

Late in the period, Charrois made another strong save, sliding left to right to seal off the right post on wraparound try following a lengthy cycle by Des Moines.

Des Moines put up nine shots in the first period to Chicago's three, the fewest the Steel have recorded in a period so far this season.

The Steel turned the game on its head in the second period with three goals in a span of just three minutes.

A power play chance under three minutes into the middle frame sprung the Steel into attack mode as Schultz found Crowder on a great backdoor pass to get Chicago to within one, 2-1.

Just under two minutes later and on another power play, Schultz cashed in with a birthday goal on a wicked one-timer from the right faceoff circle that whistled past the mask of Des Moines goaltender Max Weilandt.

One minute and 15 seconds later, James Scantlebury dished a saucer pass to Pace who evaded defenders and scored off his own rebound to make it a two-goal lead for the Steel.

Charrois continued to work in the blue paint to keep the Steel ahead with a superb five-hole stop on a breakaway on Harper Searles with nine minutes left, but Des Moines continued to attack and scored late in the middle frame when Luke Norcross found Searles on a cross-crease pass to make it a 3-2 game.

Chicago was credited with five shots on goal in the second period to the Buccaneers' eight, giving the home team a 17-8 advantage going to the third period.

At the halfway point of the third period, Des Moines tied the game at three when Nate Delladonna fired over the glove of Charrois from the slot.

Neither team could break the three-all tie, taking the game to overtime, the first extra time matchup for both teams this season.

On the opening faceoff in overtime, Searles was issued a delay of game penalty after shoveling the puck with his hand on the draw, giving the Steel a 4-on-3 power play to start the extra frame.

Chicago struggled to get chances on the advantage, and Des Moines had a shorthanded look when Argentina broke loose on the left wing, but Charrois made a great stop.

Des Moines killed the power play and responded with several offensive looks, but neither the Buccaneers nor the Steel prevailed in overtime, leading to the first shootout of the season for Chicago.

Schultz started the shootout with a snipe, followed by a pair of stops by Charrois. Des Moines scored in the third round to extend the contest.

Sisson scored on his backhand in the fifth round, putting the game on the edge, but Searles scored to continue the marathon.

Major stepped to the plate in the top of the eighth and beat Weilandt on a wrist shot. Former Steel forward Owen Tylec was called upon in the bottom half but couldn't get by Charrois.
