Steel Knock off Capitols in Weekend Finale
November 21, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release
The Madison Capitols fall 6-2 tonight to the Chicago Steel at Fox Valley Ice Arena. The Caps had their fair share of opportunities tonight but unfortunately ran into a hot goaltender as Homer Gibson stopped 30 of the 32 shots he faced. This is the first time all season the Capitols have been swept in a weekend.
Madison found themselves down early tonight after a miscommunication in front of the Madison net was put home by Chicago just 52 seconds into the 1st period. Trailing 3-0, the Caps netted their first goal of the evening at 14:07 of the middle frame.
Blake Dangos received a pass from Reid Pabich at the Capitols blueline, turned the after burners on, made a move to the middle and shelfed it for his second goal of the season. Later in the 3rd period, Jake Dunlap tipped a great shot from the point by Landon Fleming for his seventh goal of the season. Kyle Kukkonen was credited with the secondary assist.
"I liked out game tonight believe it or not," Caps head coach Tom Upton said. "I thought we played a full 60. I thought we executed the game plan and we competed hard which we needed to after last night."
"When you're playing another top team like we did tonight, those games can go either way. Chicago did a great job of when we had breakdowns, capitalizing on those chances. When they had breakdowns, we did a great job of creating offense but we just didn't capitalize on some of those chances."
The Caps hit the road for a trio of games next week. On Wednesday they'll travel to Young Arena to take on the Waterloo Black Hawks for the first time this season. Following Thanksgiving, Madison and the Muskegon Lumberjacks will battle it out in a weekend series.
