DUBUQUE, IOWA - The Chicago Steel controlled the tempo of Saturday night's game at Mystique Community Ice Center in Dubuque, Iowa, but couldn't find a way to break through against Dubuque Fighting Saints goaltender Matthew Thiessen, who stopped all 44 shots he faced for the 5-0 shutout win. In a possible First Round playoff preview, Dubuque (28-24-4-4, 64 pts.) was backed by not only their goaltender, but a mutli-goal night from Matias Maccelli (2-0-2) as Chicago (25-21-4-0, 74 pts.).
Dubuque started the scoring when forward Cooper Haar struck 22 seconds into the game as forward Patrick Smyth found Haar's stick at the side for the easy slam home past a sprawling Chicago goaltender Justin Robbins.
Despite the early deficit, Chicago had the majority of the game's chances through the first two periods. Thiessen's busiest period was the second, as he turned away 19 Chicago shots, including a point-blank chance from Steel left wing Neil Shea.
Dubuque struck for a pair of goals in the back half of the second period to take a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes of play. Forward Bram Scheerer jammed home a wrap-around chance with 6:24 to play in the middle frame and Maccelli made it a three-goal game with 1:12 remaining in the second. After sustained offensive pressure from Chicago and a skating and stickhandling clinic from Steel left wing Robert Mastrosimone, Maccelli was sprung on a breakaway where he wristed a shot through the five-hole of Robbins.
Maccelli collected his second goal of the night, this time shorthanded, to make it 4-0 in the third as he fired a wrist shot past the glove of Robbins. Forward Dylan Jackson capped the scoring late in the game with his 13th tally of the season.
The Steel return to Fox Valley for the final regular season home game on Friday, April 12 against the Central Illinois Flying Aces as the team hosts Fan Appreciation Night, giving away hundreds of prizes to fans on the special evening. Chicago will wrap up the regular season in Muskegon the following night with a game against the Lumberjacks.
Tickets for all Steel home games are on sale now starting at just $10 and stadium seating on the glass is available for just $20. Parking is always free.
