Steel Announce 2020-2021 Regular Season Schedule

September 29, 2020 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Chicago Steel News Release

GENEVA, ILLINOIS - The Chicago Steel today announced their schedule for the 2020-2021 United States Hockey League regular season, the 20th Anniversary season for the club.

This campaign comes on the heels of the most successful regular season in team history in which the Steel amassed a club record 41 wins and 83 points while holding numerous USHL records at the time the season was canceled in March. The Steel were awarded the 2019-2020 Anderson Cup given to the regular season champion, the first in team history.

The 54-game regular season is scheduled to begin on Friday, November 6 and features a more regionalized schedule in an effort to limit team travel. 14 teams will participate in the USHL season following the temporary withdrawal of Cedar Rapids and Madison for the 2020-2021 campaign.

The Steel will open the 2020-2021 slate with two home contests against the Youngstown Phantoms on Friday, November 6 at 7:05 pm CT and Sunday, November 8 at 3:05 pm CT. The Steel scored five or more goals against the Phantoms in four of their six matchups last year.

Opening weekend will account for two of 12 scheduled clashes between the Steel and Phantoms, the highest number of games against any single team on the Chicago calendar.

The Steel will face off against the Green Bay Gamblers, Muskegon Lumberjacks and Team USA a total of 10 times apiece, and the Dubuque Fighting Saints eight times. Chicago will play a pair of matchups each versus the Des Moines Buccaneers and Waterloo Black Hawks.

Chicago and Dubuque were the two highest-scoring teams in the USHL a season ago, making their eight-game season series some of the most highly-anticipated matchups of the year. The Steel averaged 4.94 goals per game while the Fighting Saints notched 3.75 markers per contest. In their four matchups last season, the Steel captured victories in all four, two of which were in overtime. Chicago will host Dubuque for the first time in back-to-back matchups Saturday, February 13 and Sunday, February 14.

Former Steel Head Coach Dan Muse, who led Chicago to its only Clark Cup Championship in 2016-2017, will return to Fox Valley Ice Arena as the new coach of Team USA - U18 on Saturday, November 28, the third of five battles this season with the U18 team. During the 2019-2020 campaign, the Steel owned a 2-0-1-0 mark against Team USA in the 3-game season series.

After three November matchups against Green Bay, the Gamblers will serve as Chicago's first opponent of the new year with a Saturday night home game on January 2. The Steel and Gamblers met January 2 and 3, 2020 as part of the inaugural Frosty Cup in Dallas last season which featured an outdoor game at the historic Cotton Bowl.

Two Western Conference foes will make the trip to Fox Valley Ice Arena for back-to-back games in mid-January. The Steel will host the Des Moines Buccaneers on Friday, January 15 and Waterloo Black Hawks the following night. Both games start at 7:05 pm and will be the only home contests against teams from the Western Conference during the regular season.

January is scheduled to be the team's busiest month with 13 total games including eight matchups on the road. Last season, the Steel were an impressive 21-2-0-0 away from home.

Starting on Sunday, March 7, Chicago kicks off a stretch of 12 home games out of the final 16 contests of the season as the team hopes to make a playoff push. This season, four teams from each conference will qualify for the Clark Cup Playoffs.

Friday and Saturday home games are slated to begin at 7:05 p.m. with six Sunday contests scheduled to start at 3:05 p.m. The team's preseason schedule will be announced soon.

Ticketing information is not available at this time as the Steel await further guidance from the State of Illinois related to spectators for the 2020-2021 season.
