STEAMWHEELERS NOTES:
To Beat the Best: For the second straight season, the Steamwheelers will play one of the af2's unbeaten teams in their fourth game of the season. Last year, Quad City traveled to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on April 24 to take on the Pioneers. Both teams entered that game with perfect records, but the Pioneers would get the better of the âWheelers on that day, pulling out a 40-27 victory, dropping Quad City to a 3-1 record.
However, this is by far not the latest in a season that the Steamwheelers have tangled with an undefeated team. In Week Seven last year, the âWheelers knocked off the previously unbeaten Wichita 73-39 at The MARK. In 2001 the âWheelers were handed the first loss in franchise history when undefeated Tulsa knocked them off at the Tulsa Convention Center by a score of 49-47 in Week Six.
Forbes Doubles His Pleasure: For the second straight week, Steamwheelers Defensive Specialist Matt Forbes was named ADT Defensive Player of the Week. He recorded two interceptions for a second straight week on Saturday against Oklahoma City, and went one better, returning them both for scores, making him the first player since Arkansas' Reggie Cooley, who also pulled off the feet against the Yard Dawgz, last year to return two picks for scores.
With the back-to-back awards, Forbes became the first player in af2 history to win Defensive Player of the Week on consecutive weeks. These were the second and third such honors of Forbes' career as he also garnered the ADT award in Week 5 of last season.
The Davenport native, who is second all-time in Quad City history with 16 career picks, also set a couple of team records by becoming the first player to grab multiple interceptions in consecutive weeks and the first to return two picks in the same game for touchdowns, with the second of those being taken back a club record 53 yards for the game's final score.
Forbes now leads the af2 with five picks as well as 106 return yards and two touchdowns on those five interceptions.
Seven Shooter: Sam Clemons' seven touchdown tosses without a pick on Saturday in Oklahoma City was the most touchdown passes by a Quad City QB without an interception since Ronnie Gordon threw for eight scores in the 62-61 loss to Luoisville on June 5, 2004. For the season, Clemons has thrown for 673 yards and 13 touchdowns to go along with just one interception.
Eclipsing Sixty: Saturday's win over Oklahoma City was the 42nd time in team history that the Steamwheelers had scored more than 60 points. In those 42 games the âWheelers are 40-2. The two losses have come in each of the last two years as Quad City dropped a 62-61 decision in Louisville on June 5, 2004, and was eliminated from the postseason for the first time eve on August 9, 2003 with a 63-61 home loss to Arkansas.
Xploring Some Bad Memories: The last time that Memphis ventured to the Quad Cities, it was sent scurrying back home with a loss for the record books. On April 13, 2001, in just the second game in franchise history, the Xplorers were crushed by the âWheelers 97-7.
The 90-point margin of defeat is the second biggest in af2 history and the biggest in Memphis' franchise history, while the 97 points allowed and seven points scored are the all-time high and low for the club respectively.
Goodloe Gone: After failing his physical with the Steamwheelers a week ago, OL/DL Will Goodloe was returned to the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz. The 6'6 320 lbs. lineman from West Texas A&M was acquired from Oklahoma City on April 13 in exchange for Antonio Dingle, and arrived in the Quad Cities early last week before failing a routine physical. He saw limited action for the Yard Dawgz in their loss on Saturday to the âWheelers, making one tackle.
