Familiar faces among week four award winners
April 26, 2005 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - Amarillo quarterback JULIAN REESE, Rio Grande Valley fullback/linebacker CHRIS ROBINSON and Quad City defensive specialist MATT FORBES have been named the Offensive Player, U.S. Army Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 4 of the 2005 season.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Reese (6-2, 225, Indiana State), a rookie, propelled the Amarillo Dusters to one of af2's best offensive performances in history in an 86-66 win over the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings on Saturday night. Reese dissected the Battle Wings defense for 424 yards on 27-of-34 passing with nine touchdowns and no interceptions. The mobile signal-caller also rushed six times for 23 yards and two additional touchdowns, making him responsible for 11 touchdowns on the night. With 424 passing yards, Reese became only the sixth player in af2 history to eclipse the 400-yard mark. His total ranks as the second highest single game total in league history behind Shane Stafford's 459-yard outing for Tallahassee on June 2, 2000. Throwing touchdowns to five different receivers, Reese had two receivers with 145 or more yards. This is the second time this season that Reese has won Offensive Player of the Week, as he also claimed the honor for his efforts in Week 1.
U.S. ARMY IRONMAN OF THE WEEK
Robinson (6-3, 260, New Hampshire), in his second season, made big plays on both sides of the ball to help the Rio Grande Valley Dorados earn their first win of the season with a 40-32 decision over division rival Bakersfield on Friday night. After the Dorados fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter, Robinson changed the game's momentum and put the Dorados on the board by sacking Blitz QB Chad Elliott for a safety early in the second quarter. On the ensuing possession, he scampered 12 yards for a rushing touchdown to bring the Dorados within four points. For the game, Robinson rushed eight times for 44 yards with the one touchdown. His 44 yards on the ground set a team record and a league high for this season. On defense, he totaled 3.5 tackles with two sacks, including the second-quarter safety. This is the first weekly award of Robinson's career. He is the first Dorado to be honored since Eddie Moten won ADT Defensive Player of the Week for Week 18 of last season.
ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Forbes (5-10, 175, William Penn), a third-year veteran, proved to be a clutch performer for the Steamwheelers for the second straight week in a 61-43 win over the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz on Saturday night. Following up his two fourth quarter interceptions in Week 3, Forbes nabbed two more interceptions in the fourth quarter in Week 4, returning both for touchdowns to put the game out of reach for Oklahoma City. His second interception return, which went 53 yards for a score, set a team record and was the third longest in af2 history. Forbes also had 4.5 tackles and two additional pass break-ups in the game. This is the second week in a row that Forbes has earned this accolade. WR/DB Bobby Sippio (now with AFL Dallas) was the last player to win a weekly award in consecutive weeks. He won Ironman of the Week three weeks in a row (Weeks 14-16) during the 2003 season while playing for Greensboro.
