Quad City Steamwheelers News Release
(Davenport, IA) - The Quad City Steamwheelers will hold their second open player tryouts presented by Schnucks and Plaza Physical Therapy on December 3, 2006 at the Orthopedic Specialists Sports Complex in Davenport.
The tryouts, which will also be open to the public, will by held from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., with registration starting at 7:30 a.m. The cost to tryout is $50.00 for players who register by December 1st and $55.00 for walk-ins the day of the tryout. The public can attend for $5.00, which includes a t-shirt and a meal courtesy of Schnucks in Bettendorf.
The last tryout was a success with fans of the Steamwheelers watching athletes compete for an invitation to the Steamwheelers training camp in March. This tryout is expected to be even better with the team expecting over 25 athletes to attend. Head Coach Sean Ponder will be running the tryout, while Troy Biladeau, the Steamwheelers defensive coordinator, will be on hand as well to help evaluate talent.
"This is another great opportunity for fans to get a first look at players who are vying for training camp invites," said Mike Bawden, Managing Partner of the Quad City Steamwheelers. "Who knows, one of these guys could be the next Tim Dodge or Jack Walker Jr."
Doors will open to the public at 7:50 for fans wishing to attend, with the tryout starting promptly at 8:00 a.m. While fans attending the October tryout enjoyed a great time changes have been made to make this one an even more enjoyable experience for the fans. There will be an explanation of each drill for fans before the drill is performed. Fans will be able to sit closer to the field and a program will be provided so fans can identify who is trying out. Fans that wear the shirt from the last open tryout can receive free admission to this training camp.
"I got great feedback from our fans who attended our last open tryout," said Bawden. "That was the first tryout the Steamwheelers had ever invited fans to attend. Before it was even over, we had identified several ways to make the event not only better for those trying out, but a better experience for our fans."
Players need to wear molded cleats. Kickers should not attend this tryout; there will be another tryout for kickers only at a later date. Any players that have questions about the tryout should contact head coach Sean Ponder at (563) 441-2147 or sponder@steamwheelers.com. To pre-register for the tryout, players should contact Darrick Reaves at (563) 324-4888.
