Quad City Steamwheelers News Release

DAVENPORT, Iowa — The story of the Quad City Steamwheelers season so far has not been their 3-0 record, rather it has been who is going to play the line?

Steamwheelers coach Rich Ingold came closer to putting the final pieces of the puzzle together on Thursday afternoon when the arenafootball2 league office assigned the Steamwheelers offensive lineman/defensive lineman Jerry Montgomery.

The former Iowa Hawkeye will be in uniform this Saturday when the ‘Wheelers travel to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (Pa.) to take on the 2-0 Pioneers. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. (EST).

Montgomery was a four-year letter winner out of the University of Iowa and earned the Coaches Appreciation Award for defense his senior year. In those four seasons he recorded 135 tackles (69UT-66AT) including 20 tackles for a loss.

He had five sacks, six quarterback hurries and six pass breakups to go along with three fumble recoveries.

Montgomery started in 32 games and played in 41 games throughout his career.

He battled an ankle injury his senior year and was one of four true freshmen that saw action in 1998.

After his stellar career at Iowa, he entered camp with the New Orleans Saints of the NFL. Montgomery was a training camp cut and then made his way to Chicago to join the AFL's Rush.

Montgomery played all season with the Rush and recorded four tackles and a quarterback hurry. From there he went on to the Buffalo Bills (NFL) mini-camp. Then Montgomery started this AFL season with the Colorado Crush on their practice squad.

He attended Virgin Valley (Nev.) High School where he was the Nevada State Player of the Year and earned Street & Smith all-American honors in two consecutive years. He was first team all-conference and all-state and played in the Nevada all-star game.

Montgomery is helping fill the holes left by former fellow Hawkeye and backup center Pete Traynor, who is out with a broken right foot and lineman Brandon Williams, who has been out with a torn MCL.

The Steamwheelers have started the season with a perfect 3-0 record and remain the af2's top team. Last weekend, the ‘Wheelers thumped, then No. 2-ranked Tennessee Valley 47-29 at The MARK of the Quad Cities. This weekend, the ‘Wheelers travel to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to take on the seventh ranked Pioneers (2-0). The game will kickoff at 7 p.m. (EST). The ‘Wheelers will then return home the following weekend and host the Green Bay Blizzard at 7:30 p.m.

Good seats are still available and can be purchased through The MARK box office or through TicketMaster at 563-326-1111 or by visiting www.ticketmaster.com.

"Pick 5" season ticket plans are still available. Fans interested in purchasing the package may contact Steamwheelers Director of Ticket Sales Brian Forth at 563-324-4888 or toll free at 1-866-STEAMTIX. For all the up to the minute Steamwheelers news, visit www.steamwheelers.com.
