Quad City Steamwheelers News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa â The Quad City Steamwheelers announced today that veteran FB/LB Brian Berg was assigned to the team by the arenafootball2 (af2) league office.
Berg joined the Steamwheelers midway through the 2003 season and played his first game in a Steamwheelers uniform against the Louisville Fire on June 14.
"Down the stretch, he became one of our better players," Steamwheelers head coach Rich Ingold said. "There were times when (Steamwheelers FB/LB Josh) Fourdyce got hurt and he ended up playing the whole game. "He is a true warrior and is as good as any FB/LB in the af2."
In six regular season games with the Steamwheelers, Berg recorded 12 tackles (five solo), a tackle for a loss of five yards, a sack and a fumble recovery. On the offensive side of the ball, Berg rushed for 34 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.
The 6'0, 270 lbs. Berg joined the Steamwheelers after playing for a season and a half with the af2's San Diego Riptide. He scored the first ever touchdown for the Riptide in their inaugural 2002 season when he scored on a 7-yard run. It came against the Bakersfield Blitz on April 6. Berg also recorded the Riptide's first ever defensive sack.
Over the 2002 and the first half of the 2003 season, Berg played in 25 games for the Riptide and had 108 yards rushing and four touchdowns on 24 carries.
On defense, Berg had 52.5 tackles (32 solo), 6.5 going for combined losses of 19 yards. Berg also added four sacks for losses of 22 yards and had 18 QB hurries. He forced a fumble, recovered another, blocked a kick, as well as adding a 48-yard interception return for a touchdown.
"You can see from the quality of Berg's San Diego stats that he has the ability to really help on our team now that he will be with us for a full season in 2004," Ingold added. Berg will be re-joining fifth year FB/LB Fourdyce and second year Steamwheelers FB/LB James Houston as well as rookie Jesse Beckom.
"We are very healthy at the FB/LB position," Ingold said. "The good news is that a lot of those guys are flexible and some of them can rush of the edge (on defense). "We have two proven guys in Berg and Fourdyce and can win a championship with them."
The Steamwheelers are in full swing and preparing for their Fifth Anniversary season, which begins on the first weekend in April. Season tickets are currently on sale, starting as low as $54. Fans looking to purchase season tickets may contact Steamwheelers Director of Ticket Sales Brian Forth at 563-324-4888 or toll free at 1-866-STEAMTIX.
