August 5, 2012 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Edenton Steamers News Release

EDENTON, NC - Troy Scribner struck out 11 over his seven shut-out innings and the Steamers (38-17, 2-0) put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the seventh in their 5-1 game two win over the Martinsville Mustangs (24-33, 0-2) on Sunday at Historic Hicks Field.

Troy Scribner (Sacred Heart University), making just his second start at home all season, came out firing. He retired the first nine Mustangs that came to the plate, striking out six.

Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) connected off Jason Turner in the bottom of the second for a solo home run to make it 1-0 Edenton.

Martinsville didn't get a hit against Scribner until the top of the fourth, a lead-off single by Zack Hagaman, and failed to score in the inning.

The Mustangs failed to score in the top of the fifth on a one-out walk and after Scribner struck out the side in the sixth for the second time in the game the Mustangs failed to score in the seventh on two singles, stranding runners on first and second base.

Scribner pitched seven innings and allowed no runs on three hits; he walked one batter and struck out 11 in his most dominant performance for Edenton this summer. Scribner improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the postseason.

Jason Turner, who through six innings had only allowed one run on three hits and no walks, adding six strikeouts, came out for the seventh. With two outs Wes Meadows (Otterbein University) hammered a ball over the high wall in left-centerfield for a solo home run to make it 2-0 Steamers. Wigberto Nevarez (Lubbock Christian University) singled and Robbie Zinsmeister (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) doubled right after him. Michael Massi (Mercer University) hit a soft line drive into shallow left field for a two-run single and the Steamers had a 4-0 lead.

DJ Johnson (Mercer University) pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Jordan Egan (Norfolk State University) came on after the Steamers added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on Camporeale sacrifice fly that scored Johnny Garrett (Southern Arkansas University) for a 5-0 Steamer lead.

Egan, who earned a save in the Steamers game one win, allowed a line drive solo home run to Ian Harvey. Jake Stone then walked and was put out on a fielder's choice with one out. Adam Pendleton struck out swinging to end the ball game and the series as the Steamers swarmed the field to celebrate their 5-1 win in game two.

The Steamers now wait and see who the winner of the Forest City vs. Asheboro series will be. They will play a deciding game three tomorrow night in Forest City. If the Owls win Edenton travels to Columbia on Wednesday, August 8th for game one. If Asheboro wins the Steamers travel to Asheboro for game one.

The series sweep of Martinsville is the second time in as many years that Edenton has swept their opening round opponent and the third straight year the Steamers have advanced into the second round of the CPL Petitt Cup Playoffs.

The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 53 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
