MARTINSVILLE, VA - The Steamers scored twice in the top of the seventh inning against the Martinsville bullpen to take a one-run lead on their way to a 6-4 win in game one of their opening round series on Saturday at Hooker Field.
The Steamers began the back and forth affair with a run in the top of the third inning. Michael Massie (Mercer University) was hit by a pitch and Jason Kanzler (University at Buffalo) hit a deep fly ball to left field that was caught, Massi tagged and scored easily after moving to third on a wild pitch and a ground out.
Martinsville tied the game a half inning later with a two-out RBI single by Zack Hagaman that scored Adam Pendleton, who had singled earlier in the inning.
The Steamers once again took a one-run lead a half inning later when Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) walked and moved to third on Wes Meadows (Otterbein University) single. He scored on Wigberto Nevarez's (Lubbock Christian University) sacrifice fly to center field to make it 2-1.
Martsinville came right back and took a 3-2 lead when John Faircloth hit an RBI single that scored Ian Harvey and tied the game. Two batters later, after another single, Adam Pendleton dropped down a safety squeeze bunt up the first base line that scored Faircloth to make it 3-2.
The Steamers scratched out the tying the run again in the top of the third when Kanzler was hit by a pitch and stole second base. He scored on Madison Beaird's (Arkansas Tech University) single, Beaird played catalyst all game, recording a four-for-five day at the plate with a double and an RBI in the win.
Adam Pendleton picked up the second two-out RBI for the Mustangs in the ball game when he singled home Jake Stone for his second RBI of the game and Martinsville a 4-3 lead.
Taylor Hart came out for the top of the seventh and issued back-to-back walks to Robbbie Zinsmeister (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) and Massi. James Gaines came into the game and after a sacrifice bunt moved both runners up 90 feet and Kanzler hit a ball that the third baseman Jake Stone tried to back hand. The ball scooted into left field for a two base error and both runners scored for 5-4 Edenton lead.
Ryan Woodring (North Greeneville University) and Jordan Egan (Norfolk State University) combined for a scoreless eighth inning and Egan came out for the ninth inning to earn his first post season save and 16th of the season.
Edenton scored a big insurance run in the top of the ninth on DJ Johnson's (Mercer University) sacrifice fly to make it 6-4. The sacrifice fly was the third of the night for the Steamers.
Egan struck out all four batters he faced In the ball game and earned the save.
Game two is tomorrow night in Edenton with first pitch at 7 PM. The gates will open at 6 PM and tickets are on-sale now at the Steamers office, located at 111 E. Freemason St. Edenton, NC.
