Edenton Steamers News Release

HAMPTON, VA - The Edenton Steamers split a doubleheader with the Peninsula Pilots on Tuesday night. Edenton (7-6) took game one by a final count of 10-7, while Peninsula (8-4) stole the second game in walk-off fashion, 2-1.

Randy Dobnak collected the win for the Steamers in game one. Dobnak (2-0) hurled 4.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits with five walks and six strikeouts. Kade Granier took the loss for the Teal and Black in game two. Granier (0-1) recorded two outs in the final frame, surrendering the game-winning run on a double to left-center.

Welby Malczewski shouldered the loss for Peninsula in game one. Malczewski (1-1) lasted three innings, giving up seven runs on six hits while fanning two Steamers and walking two. Robbie Hiser got the win in game two, holding Edenton scoreless with one strikeout in the seventh inning.

The Clams opened the scoring in game one with a three-run second inning. A walk to Stefan Van Horn put a man on for Trey Hair, who was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Jimbo Pernetti bounced a ball to short, and the slow roller allowed all runners to reach and load the bases. Ben Prada grounded out to first to advance the runners, and Ryan Byers added a bases-clearing double to put the Steamers up 3-0.

Edenton broke the game wide open with four more runs in the third. Tony Rosselli led off with a single, and a Thatcher Coleman walk put two Clams on with no outs. Aaron Aucker cracked a double to plate a run, and Van Horn cleared the bases with a shot over the left field wall, giving Edenton a 7-0 lead.

The Pilots made things interesting with four runs in the fifth. Will Shepherd started the rally with a one-out single, and Kurt Sinnen drew a walk in the next at bat to put runners on first and second. Darian Carpenter singled in Shepherd, and Dobnak walked Andrew Yacyk to load the bases. After Charlie Cody was hit by a pitch, Devon Mahoney added another single to score Peninsula's third run of the inning. A walk to Joe Poduslenko brought the score to 7-4 after five.

Peninusla added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Edenton got some insurance with three more runs in the seventh. Rosselli cracked his second leadoff single, moving to second on an Aucker bunt. Van Horn knocked a two-out single to score Rosselli. Hair plated Van Horn with a triple in the following at bat, coming home himself when the throw from centerfield skipped into the Steamers' dugout.

The Pilots attempted a rally in the seventh, but they were only able to plate one run.

The Steamers scored their only run of game two in the first frame. Richie Cunningham knocked a triple, coming home on Rosselli's sacrifice fly in the next at bat.

Peninsula didn't find any offense until the sixth. Shepherd connected for a one-out single and stole second. Two batters later, Sinnen bounced a ball to short, and Tyler Ammerman bobbled the ball, allowing Shepherd to score.

The Pilots finished off the Clams in the seventh. Nick Walker drew a walk and stole second to put a runner in scoring position. Shepherd doubled two batters later to score Walker and end the game.

The Edenton Steamers return to Hicks Field on Wednesday night. The Clams host the Morehead City Marlins with first pitch set for 7 p.m. For more information, fans can call (252) 482-4080 or visit edentonsteamers.com.
