Current Salamander Chris Clare (High Point University / Fort Mill, S.C.) and former Salamanders Joey Roach (Georgia State / Holly Springs, N.C.) and Collin Woody (University of North Carolina at Greensboro / Tampa, Fla.) had childhood dreams realized in the 2016 MLB Draft. Clare, the first Salamander to ever be drafted, was taken in the 21st round (overall #631) by the Baltimore Orioles, while Roach was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 31st round (overall #930) and Woody by the Orioles in the 38th round (overall #1141).
Through six games this season, Clare owned a .191 batting average with one home run and seven RBI for the Salamanders. During the 2016 season at High Point, Clare paced the offensive attack for the Panthers. The Fort Mill, S.C. native led the team with a .345 batting average and his 15 doubles stood second.
Roach and Woody both played for the Salamanders during their inaugural 2015 season. Mainstays in the lineup throughout the entire summer, Roach and Woody combined for 20 of the team's 25 home runs on the year. Roach's .280 batting average ranked fourth on the team and Woody stood seventh with a .249 average. Woody also recorded a team-high four saves in 17.1 innings pitched.
During the 2016 spring campaign, Roach led Georgia State in RBI (45), slugging percentage (.598), home runs (11), and hit by pitch (10) while standing second on the team in average (.325), hits (55), and doubles (13). For the Spartans of UNC-G, Woody emerged as a star in his senior year. The third basemen hit .349 in 49 games while leading the team with 23 doubles, 10 home runs, and 66 RBI. He also worked 30 innings on the mound for the Spartans boasting a 3.60 ERA with 23 strikeouts.
