Steamers Pile up Peninsula K's, but Lose 7-5
July 11, 2018 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Edenton Steamers News Release
Despite striking out 20 batters, the Edenton Steamers lost 7-5 to the Peninsula Pilots on Wednesday night at Historic Hicks Field.
The loss drops the Clams' record to 1-6 in the second half and Peninsula jumps to 4-2.
Between Charles Hall and AJ Spencer, the two managed to fan 20 Pilots hitters, but handed them seven runs on eight hits and six walks.
Spencer got the loss in four innings out of relief, punching out 11 for the second time this year. He now has three dougle-digit strikeout performances this summer, all in consecutive outings.
Paul Hall outmatched Spencer, however, out of the bullpen. Earning the win, he spanned five shutout frames with seven fanned Steamers.
After the Pilots scored one run in the first inning, Edenton blasted two separate two-run home runs in the second. Zane Harris and Nick Caruso each went yard over the left center field wall to give the Steamers a 4-1 lead. Harris finished 2-for-4.The Steamers, however, were only able to muster up one more run. Rich Ciufo lofted a sacrifice fly RBI in the third inning, and after that, the Teal and Black were shut down.
Duncan Hunter exploded for four runs batted in, including a home run. He had the game-winning hit in the top half of the seventh, a bases-clearing double with two outs to seal the victory.
Tyler Adams helped with a round-tripper and double of his own, totaling two runs batted in. Entering the ballgame, Adams was hitting .086 over his last 10 contests.
Interestingly enough, every Pilots batter struck out at least once and seven of them had multi-strikeout games, yet still came out on top.
For the Steamers, Tyler Jones added three hits from the eighth spot in the order. All of them were infield base hits.
Edenton returns to play on Thursday night at home facing the Morehead City Marlins set for a 7 p.m. start.
