March 31, 2006 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
St. Louis Steamers News Release
Playing without several of their starters, the Steamers fell 7-6 to the Baltimore Blast at 1st Mariner Arena Friday night.
The first-place Steamers are 21-7 and have clinched both the MISL Regular Season Championship as well as home field advantage in the upcoming MISL Championship Series. The Blast, who have also qualified for postseason play, improved to 17-11 with the win.
Baltimore got on the board early in the game when Robbie Aristodemo scored 52 seconds into the first quarter to give the Blast a 1-0 lead. The Steamers answered at 10:03 on a goal by Genoni Martinez, and the opening period expired with the score tied 1-1.
Baltimore went up 2-1 when Danny Kelly scored at 3:52 of the second quarter. Just 19 seconds later, Elvir Kafedzic scored for the Steamers to again tie the contest (2-2). Carlos Garcia scored to give the Blast a 3-2 lead at 5:37 of the quarter. Baltimore increased their lead to 4-2 when Garcia scored his second of the contest. Jeff DiMaria answered for St. Louis and Billy Nelson scored for the Blast and the first half ended with Baltimore enjoying a 5-3 lead.
Baltimore increased their lead to three (6-3) when Giuliano Celenza scored the first goal of the third quarter. St. Louis answered on DiMaria's second tally of the contest to make the score 6-4 at the end of the third quarter.
The Blast went ahead 7-4 at 4:43 of the fourth quarter on a tally by Jonathan Steele. Mike Apple scored for St. Louis to reduce the deficit to 7-5. Carlos "Chile" Farias closed the gap to one (7-6) late in the quarter but it was too little, too late for the Steamers as the Blast held on for the win.
Having clinched the Regular Season title as well as home field advantage in the playoffs, St. Louis Coach Omid Namazi decided to rest several Steamers starters. Randy Soderman, Joe Reiniger, Mali Walton, Shawn David and goalkeeper Brett Phillips did not make the trip to Baltimore for Friday's match.
