Steamers Edged in 11

July 6, 2018 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Edenton Steamers News Release

The Steamers and the Wilson Tobs battled for yet another 11-inning thriller on Thursday night, but this time the Tobs trumped Edenton 10-8 at Hicks Field.

It was a constant back-and-forth fight between the two North division rivals, but Wilson continued to stay hot, increasing its second half record to 4-0. The Clams are now 0-4.

Shamoy Christopher, a former Steamer, clocked the game-winning hit in the 11th, a RBI single to score Caleb Dean. Ben Faso followed up with a run of his own after Josh Netterville sailed his throw from right field into the Edenton dugout, giving the Tobs a free run.

TJ Wegmann made it an interesting ballgame in the home half of the eighth. Coming into the at-bat with no runs batted in this year, Wegmann rocketed a two-run home run over the right field wall to give the Steamers a 6-5 lead.

Wilson executed with more timely hitting in the top half of the ninth, however. Drew Brooks, who had three hits in his last 39 at-bats, pushed a single up the first base line to score Faso and make it tied up.

In the 10th, the Tobs plated two runners on a sacrifice fly RBI and an error. The Clams answered with two more in the bottom of the inning, but Wilson did not stop in the 11th.

Luis Acosta improved to 3-2, earning the win tossing the final three innings. He did not allow a run, dropping his earned run average to 1.62.

Troy Maslowski was tabbed with the loss, surrendering four runs, but all unearned.

Ben Anderson sparked the Steamers with 11 strikeouts in five frames out of the bullpen. He has yet to allow a run in 14.2 innings this summer and now has 27 punch-outs. Each team sent six arms to the mound to finish out the contest.

For Wilson, Jack Duffy knocked four runs batted in. He entered the night with just one this year. Christopher and Matt McCourt helped with two-hit games each.

On the Steamers end, Ben Whetstone rattled two doubles. Netterville added two singles and three runs scored.

Anthony Warneke contributed with two RBI and Rich Ciufo and Devon Gardner had one each.

The Steamers are next in action on Friday night at Wilmington set for a 7 p.m. start.
