Sharks Fall in Extras
July 6, 2018 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release
Both Danny Wilson and Danny Wondrack went deep, but it was not enough in the Sharks 11-9 loss in 11 innings. Wilmington (11-19) saw a four game losing streak come to an end; meanwhile, Edenton (13-18) won for the first time in the second half.
The Steamers scored first with two in the second inning against starter Caleb Bishop. Both runs though were unearned as the Sharks committed two errors in the frame.
Wilmington answered in the bottom of the inning. For the second time this summer, Danny Wilson crushed a pitch out of the Shark Tank to left field. This time a three run homer put the Sharks on top 3-2.
In the third, Edenton responded with a home run of their own. Bryson Worrell hit a two-run homer to right to give the Steamers the 4-3 lead.
It was a back and forth evening as the Sharks answered again in the 6th. Wilmington scored on a double by Doug Angeli to tie at 4.
The Steamers took the lead back with two runs in the seventh on another error by the Sharks. However, Wilmington scored a run in both the seventh and the eighth to tie it at 6. In the ninth, the Sharks had the tying run at third base with two outs, but could not score the run.
Heading to extras, the Steamers jumped on Logan Barker in the 10th. Edenton scored first on a wild pitch and then on back-to-back base hits by Bryson Worrell and Devon Gardner.
Down three, the Sharks responded quickly against the Steamers. Ben LaSpaluto doubled to left to cut the deficit to two. Then, Doug Angeli hit a sacrifice fly to left to make it a 9-8 ball game. Tyler Jackson then brought in Noah Liles to pinch hit. The UNCW Seahawk fought off a pitch into center field to tie the game at nine. However, Wilmington again left the winning run in scoring position at second base.
In the 11th, Edenton added two more runs on an error by Keith Gabrielson and a sacrifice fly by Ben Whetstone.
The Sharks loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning with two outs, but left them loaded. Ryan Scharf (2-0) went 0.2 innings to earn the win, while Keith Gabrielson (1-1) lost for the Sharks. Kyle Shimp (1) worked the 11th for his first save.
Wilmington is now 4-1 in the 2nd half, while Edenton is now 1-4 in second part of the summer. The streak of innings without an earned run ended for the Sharks starters at 29.1 innings on the two-run homer by Bryson Worrell in the top of the third.
The Sharks are on the road tomorrow to face the Holly Springs Salamanders for the last game before the All-Star break. You can watch the game here: portal.stretchinternet.com/cplsalamanders
